its b/c alot of todays music sounds the same, is not exciting , is recyled from the past, etc etc. OK OK OK flame me. I'm used to it. I DONT care. I'm the only one not intitled to an opinion her...

yes...but...come on....this has happened before. look at the beatles/monkees...umm...i'm sure i can think of more. we have a lot of variety in today's music - from rap, to hip hop, to funk, to r...

starshiptrooper Jan 10, 2004

you CANNOT in any way shape or form compare the Beatles to the Monkees, who were a FABRICATED group for a TV show. Ur mom might not have been in the music the way I was. She might be older then m...

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yes, but just because there were a lot of great bands (which there were) doesn't mean they had really different sounds. A lot of them were of one type of music or another (I think that's what Dan was trying to say)

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

beatles = overrated

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

You dismiss the beatles with such ease and you haven't even really listened to them. A lot of people like the beatles, it doesn't mean they are overrated. They were breaking new ground in their time. They were huge back in the day. They were popular because they were in the right place at the right time. They were marketed well. There was a lot more to the beatles than the music. People who are big beatles fans know this was the case. It's the ppl who don't know the history of the beatles are the quickest to make such sharp judgements.

*snort*

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

If I fell in love with you, would you promise to be true..and help me understand? Because I've been in love before and I've found that love is more..then just holding hands!

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

hey. when you're right, you're right.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

thank you. that's what i was trying to say.

let's take the beach boys for example. fun music, but they didn't have a lot to say. just "surfing is fun". same with dion and the belmonts, and so on.

today, our artists have a lot more to say, musically, i think. it's not simple "i want you peggy sue", but more complex, heartfelt stuff. (for some reason i can compare our music to the 50's a lot more easily than the 60's)

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

I am totally in to the Beach Boys right now. California Girls..such an amazing song.

And I think that artists today are more free to express their emotions in different ways. If Peggy Sue broke some guys heart he couldn't write a song about his heart shattering into a million pieces and how he wishes she was dead..now he can.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003

Dion sang a song "Abraham Martin and John* which was pretty political, about *great* men getting assasinated b/c of thier ideology.
Abraham, Martin And John
by Dion

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walk up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah, but that was not the most common type of music. Today, it's common to find peoples political views in their music or just their views on anything. People are allowed to be critical and it's to be expected.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003

Well common all of you big strong men, uncle sam needs your help again,
he got himself in a terrible jam, way down yander in Vietnam,
put down your books and pick up a gun, we're gunna have a whole lotta fun.

CHORUS
and its 1,2,3 what are we fightin for?
dont ask me i dont give a dam, the next stop is Vietnam,
and its 5,6,7 open up the pearly gates. Well there aint no time to wonder why...WHOPEE we're all gunna die.

now common wall street dont be slow, why man this's war go go go,
theres plenty good money to be made, supplyin the army with the tools of the trade,
just dont be afraid if ya drop the bomb, you drop it onta Vietnam.

CHORUS

now common generals lets move fast, your big chance is here at last.
nite you go out and get those reds cuz the only good cocky is one thats dead,
you know that peace can only be won, when you blow em all with'ol gun.

CHORUS

now common mothers around the land, pack your boys off to vietnam,
common fathers don't hesatate, send your sons off before its too late,
be the first one to con your glock, and your boy go home in a box

CHORUS

Alrite !!!!!!!

***1968, not political????
watch the movie Wododstock.

BTW trooper rather than paste an entire song here, how bout just a lines and an ARTIST and TITLE? that helps a lot.

But who sang that song? Are they a famous person who influenced a lot of the young people of their time? Or were they a one-hit wonder?

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003

sorry. i thought the whole song needed to be posted.
It was written by Country Joe McDonald and is calle the I'm Fixin to Die Rag
I loved peace marches. It was a good cause and a great way to meet guys ;)

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

LUV the beach boys, they depict true beach life in california!

Anyway, times were different then, so someone could sing a sweet song about a break-up as compared to now how we have more angst, so the anger and energy is going to come out, times have evolved

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

I agree with you. The subjects in music have changed with time. Actually all entertainment has. If you don't really know the time period when the music was written, you are going to have trouble understanding how that song ever became popular.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003

true. but I DO hear lots of music of today b/c of Ra and Nic.

OK is it getting spicy in here???? LOL.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

it's not spicy. it's having an interesting discussion with different people's views. which is what this forum is about - not people saying "blah blah britney sucks nsync is crap blah blah"

good point with dion's abraham martin and john. but that wasn't a typical song of his, was it? People like sinead o'conner and the dixie chicks show their political views more openly than ever before. (sinead o'conner may be a bad example).

i think people today are more tolerant of outrageous political views and expression through music. Same goes for religious views - look at how many Christian Rock stations there are. Creed pretends to be Christian rock to sell more albums...

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

Oh boy,Sinead O'Connor-ripping a pic of the Pope on SNL wasn't the best decision.

iwz iwz

I remember in middle school hearing about this whole "generation gap" thing and thinking it was just a bick crock. it's so true tho. every generation gets attached to their time of coming of age. you relate a lot more to the music.

starshiptrooper starshiptrooperOG 2003

have you forgotten the 60s? LOTS TO SAY? end the war, love peace, all the BS
Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Country Joe and the Fish, Joni Mitchell, Ctosby Stills Nash and (sometimes ) Young, the Doors, the Who, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seger, Jimi, Janis Joplin, anyeone I missed from the REAL ORIGINAL WOodstock, then theres the 70s....
