This is a tough one for me. I grew up as a Yankee and Devils fan. So I remember when they both sucked and never made the playoffs. In fact I remember being so excited the one year the Devils DID make the playoffs in '88. I think I find more pride in cheering when the Devils are doing good. But I also think that has to do with the fact that the Yankees have been so dominating in the past few years.
I've got two great memories of being a Devils fan. At the parade in '95 I climbed on top of a park truck near where the cup was taken through and I started the Devils chant going. The other was at the Garden in about '99, Devils vs Rangers. To be able to take part of the Devils chant INSIDE Madison Square Garden was priceless in my eyes. Then walking outside I was still screaming LETS GO DEVILS! My friends were ready to kill me cause they thought I'd get us all killed but I didn't care.
I love rooting for both those teams. I remember being with them through all the lows and to see them come through all the highs is incredible. I cried in '95 when the Devils won and again in '96 when the Yankees won. I remember thinking in '96 all was good in the world, I had finally seen all my sports teams win a championship. I love hating the Mets and Red Sox, and although there's no greater rivalry in sports then the Yanks and Red Sox, I took greater pride in the Devils beating the Rangers. :) I'm going to miss that.
