So anyways, its been a while since I have checked out the site. Looks like things might be going places soon with it. Anyways I wanted to express a few things that are kind of important remotely of what some of you think. I was watching this program tonight on PBS about New York City's housing problems and I was blown away by some of the corruption. NYC's waiting list for public housing is 180,000 people long. That is mind boggling to thing that that many people in one area can be below the poverty line and not have a place to live. Then they showed some of the housing these people live in when they do get a place. Leaky ceilings, rodents, bugs and dangerous electric wiring, were some things listed. Also the city is required to set up some sort of housing for them and sometimes have to spill out into motels and hotels to provide a rest place for them. The thing that gets to me is that the city has been funded to provide housing but only goes to about 10 different real estate brokers to provide them with housing. Most of these brokers are tied to a politician or through an intermediary are able to get this. So the city gives these brokers with broken down housing the money instead of persay going to someone with a better housing product to offer. When I heard this it really made my stomach turn just to know how these poor people are being sold out so someone can get ahead politically. Did not come as a surprise though. They profiled a woman who is a member of labor union SEIU 1199. They are caretakers for the elderly and disabled and usually help them out with cooking, cleaning and all sorts of things. The state provides 18 dollars an hour to the companies that hire these caretakers. However somehow the caretaker in the end makes 7 dollars an hour which is barely above minimum wage. What the big shame is is that people who have these full time jobs any more cannot afford housing and with rents going higher and higher NYC will be facing perhaps the worst poverty level in history, even worse than the depression in the 1930's. Like I know some you don't care but as someone who lives close to the situation if you guys can help out the homeless in anyway now is a good time and it is a good witness.
