what was your first job?

so i've been real busy lately because i've been working 2 jobs. so i'm just wondering... what was the first job you ever got? was it mowing the grass for a neighbor, babysitting, flipping burgers at a fast food restaurant, or was it even working down at the docks as an "escort service"?

well technically my first job was a bus boy at a restaurant( i still am) but the job i have right now is a real job. when i say real job i mean a 9-5(actually 6:30-4) everyday kinda job. im working at a cement company that makes vaults for cemeteries to put caskets in. sometimes i help pour cement and other times im actually at the cemetery. i like it because its steady work and i make about $380 a week. the only downside is that i usually work 45 hour weeks and thats not counting my other job where i work 13 hours at a week. but hey... i need some kind of money to pay off that bmw that i just bought. there is a weird part though. two of the people that i work with have daughters that i go to school with. basically im making around the same thing as their fathers are... so they must have it pretty rough.

by the way im 17 so $380 a week isn't bad.

first real job has to be taxed? I guess that would be American Steamship. I worked there when I was 18. Receptionist-14 lines, no voicemails, not allowed to keep anyone on hold longer than 30 seconds. There were about 30 people and we were on 2 floors. I was pretty much never allowed to go to the bathroom. I quit that junk after 3 months.

I did the babysitting thing, of course. But my first REAL job was working at Kings Island, in food service. Got the job on my 14th b-day, and worked there every summer until I was 18.

Yuck.

When I was 15 and a sophomore in HS, I had an extra credit program that was proctored by one of my teachers. I was doing a project on architecture, and my teacher happened to know an architect in town that was looking for a young person to help him with basic office duties. It was really an amazing way to get a job.

I loved that job so much! I used to take a different bus there after school and walk home every day. I remember it took me like half an hour to walk there (it must have been about a mile or two) and when I walked home, I'd always stop at little spots near the lake in my town and write poetry. Or I'd go to this corner coffee shop and have an order of fries for like 3 hours, while writing poetry.

Those architects are still some of the coolest guys I've ever worked with. I was never really "fired", they just didn't have enough business to keep me on. But I visited them constantly, and one of the architects ended up teaching a drafting class I took the next year. Instant A. We still email every now and then. And they're still references on my resume. And I keep getting W-2's from them for my taxes every year because I'm still on the payroll. :) That was the best job ever.

Well..I worked at Denville Dairy for three days (that sucked) and then at this creepy T-shirt Design place, the boss was reaaallly sketchy. Then there was the coffee house for three months where I earned under minimum wage (which has now been upped to $6.15 even for waitresses!) and then for a year as a Clerk at a Legal Office!

Yep, me and funky worked at the golf course that was like 10 min from my house. I rode my bike in at like 5 in the morning... Worked my butt off and got buttloads of money for a 15 yr old hahah.

Funky is right, best job ive ever had, best time of my life, racing Jesse T around the course, neutal dropping the carts down hills, power slides around corners, driving over tee boxes, argueing over who had the all powerful "fixed cart" (the one with the governer disabled). And yes, all the free golf you wanted.

Matt, you remember that day we spent like an hour pulling balls outta the pond on 4? hahahaha soo funny. And remember that time we played chicken with those 2 fag preppy kids, and we got them to spin the cart off into the grass and that kid fell and got grass stains all over his white pants and shirt. HAHAHAHAHAHA buncha fags, we owned them.

do you make good money working at a golf coarse?

fivezero #9.4.1 fivezeroOG 2003

if it's a country club--probably. amazing tips and perks too.

rocksupastar #9.4.1.1 rocksupastarFounder

actually it was a public course right in hackettstown. But 5-0 is right, it was nice for a 15 yr old kid... i mean i made like 6 bucks an hour or something plus.. .if you worked hard during the day... sucking up and such you could walk outta there with a 75 to a 100 bucks in ur pocket.

good experience if you just wanna job a few days a week and free golf. I hear they are stricter now tho. When me and funky where there, we did ALOT, lol and i mean ALOT...

Got my first job as a senior in high school at 17 at a printing company doing HTML and Web Design stuff for the company's website.

Started working full time after I graduated, then after a few months went back to part time.

They started training me in new programming languages. First ColdFusion, then Java and JSP. When they started a new dotcom company, I got moved into that, and started working full time (4 days a week) while commuting to Dulles VA, and then NYC.

When they started laying people off (1999-2001), I began working 5 days a week so I could keep my job. I've been at the same job ever since, and it's my first real job.

first jobbie - pretty much as soon as i turned 16 i started working at an ice cream store down the road from my house which I often walked to, and I worked there for two summers, and then I transferred over to a TCBY when we moved to the other side of town

I worked at a couple retail stores too i think in the winter when the ice cream store was closed. I think I did because how else did i get money for stuff? I think I worked hah

and then I got a real job in an office at 18 in my senior year of high school, and worked in an office type environemnt almost every stinkin week of my life until about 2 months ago

now i am a stunt driver in movies and also a part time kung fu instructor

originalsnob #3 originalsnobOG 2004

I don't count babysitting 'cause it's not like you count taxes and all with that ...soooo

My first job started the summer after I graduated from high school secretary/admin for a local historic society. It was in this office in one of the actual historic houses. Me and my best friend at the time, we'd get so freaked out. The basement had all the physical archives that we had to input in the computer; so many places someone or something could pop out LOL!

tesoro #2 tesoroOG 2001

haha, sorry, when i saw that you were all happy about $380, i was thinking "sorry to break it to you buuuuut..." lol. but ur 17, so it's cool. and those guys you work with, they probably make twice as much as you. (sorry, again)

anyways, my first job was babysitting 4 kids that lived next door when i was 13. i LOVED it. the kids were pretty good, it was fun, we just went swimming all day, and they had a huge trampoline...loved it.

oh, and i worked at a pizza place for about a month...hated it.

but my first "real" job..was kinda cool..at 15, i worked at an Auctioneers office..they auctioned art & wine for non-profit organizations. that was a fun job.

(I guess you didnt ask to hear my whole work history, but i wanted to share) lol

fivezero #1 fivezeroOG 2003

My first job ever was at KFC. After that I vowed never to work at a fast food place and I never did ever again.
