Dune Chronicles
I bought the dune chronicles maybe 3 yrs ago; read the 1st 3, and the first few pgs of book 4. then they sat on my shelf for, hmm, well, 3 yrs. so, about a month ago, i picked up book 4 again and have been trying to finish the series. i'm on the last book now.
have you read any of the chronicles (beyond the 1st)?
did you like any of the movies made? hate them? don't care?
i'm facinated with the author's grasp of language and social interactions...the way characters look beyond what is said for what is NOT said. i've been trying that in real life, and it's a bit insightful.
anything strike you?

oops i still have patrick's book and haven't read it. (i am a book stealer. just ask todd and summer.)
i like many of the hardcore dune fans will not read past the first book. Overall, it is amazing because of the universe he has created. There is a language and many, many cultures and worlds(planets literally) he has created.
His story is somewhat along the lines of a messiah and so in that context it is spiritual, but he has said that everything that he has written, whether it be spiritual in nature or something that seems to be supernatural can be explained away by science or common sense.
The first book is great because it combines these elements along with a love story, a complex political climate, structured class systems, creatures and many, many more things all into the first book which he builds on in the series.
The book has its own glossary to define the terms used within. I just can't say enough and i try to read this book once a year..
Uh..why only the first book?
I haven't read these yet but my little sister is obsessed with them. I should make her come post on here about it- she's read all of them.
Interesting, I've thought about reading a Dune book, but haven't gotten the chance yet.
Where's a good place to start?

n[jk...obviously there are movies for the first 2 books. but there are certain aspects of family background and history that aren't directly covered by the films. so, you really should read the 1st book: dune.
not to get into the whole, "the book was better" argument, but i remember liking the first movie, but i had a hard time with all of the voice-overs. in the book, you realize that frank herbert likes to tell you what people are thinking and you can compare that against what they actually say. it's rather insightful, i think...and realistic. so, there are all these sections of italicized words that just don't translate too well to the film. when i saw the tv film versions, i had already read the first 3 books. so, the voice overs made more sense.
Read the first book. It is a sci-fi book, but all of that is incidental.
