Reading Circle

forrestina by forrestinaOG 2002 · Jun 2, 2006 · 150 views

One of my girl friends recently hosted a reading circle at her house. Here's how it works: everyone brings a book, magazine, journal, etc... and reads an excerpt from it to the group. We discussed what was read only if/when we wanted to. This was a great format because no one is forced to read things they weren't interested in (like at a book club). Plus, you learn about new books to check out.

I was sold on:

The Sirens of Titan - by Kurt Vonnegut
You Shall Know Our Velocity AND A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - both by Dave Eggers

There was also this amazing book translated from Italian about Marco Polo's travels around China. I have to ask the name and author of it because I can't find it online.

If anyone's big on reading and would be interested in doing this, please let me know.

dude, that vonny book is good one. as for a heartbreaking work of staggering genius--weirdly, i've seen that title around and it's in my head often, but i don't know anything about it. what an interesting title. this cements that i must read it.

I'd love to do this if I lived closer!

I'm going to check out those Eggers titles; if you're into Vonnegut as well, I trust your opinion. I just checked, and our library has them in, so I'll check em out today.

I miss NJ!

awww yea the group of us that are big into books live a minimum of 20 mins apart and a maximum of 4 hours. we get together as frequently as we can, but sometimes that's months apart. our last bookclub book was slaughterhouse five-believe it or not that was the first of Vonnegut's work i've read.

His stuff is really great. Yeah, I've got no "booky" friends around here; I'll be reading a novel while Donovan reads a technical book about a programming language. :(

I've probably said this a million times, and you may have already taken my advice, but you've got to read Cat's Cradle and Mother Night.

I enjoyed Cats Craddle but hated Slaughter House 5.

I borrowed the Eggers book from the library this afternoon. They had it in the non-fiction phsychology section, which piqued my interest, I admit. I just blindly thought it was fiction. I'm interested...
