School Books: Issue #2

omegatweeter by omegatweeterOG 2003 · Oct 23, 2003 · 165 views

well, it's almost a new marking period, but i've been reading new books for skool. i had to pick something for independent reading in english and i got The Watcher by James Howe. this book is pretty cool. it's about a strange girl, a lifeguard dude with problems, and a teen facing family problems. throughout the book you will read thru 3 different character's perspectives and later you'll see how they all intertwine. in class i'm reading All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. it's about these teens who signed up for WWI and in the beginning it's pretty sad. i didn't finish reading it tho but it's a good book, some funny parts in it.

yea, i read some of those in school, very interesting, but sad... sad that this happened to such young guys, like younger than me, and they were already in a war...

i HATED All Quiet on the Western Front... well ok, i guess i can't really say that cuz i never really read it, but we had to do it for out summer assignment for freshman honors and then we discussed it in class for the first 3 months of school... i didn't really get the discussions cuz i never read the book... but omg they sounded boring... and the movie is really freaky too,,, the best part is when they sneak off with those girls who don't speak english haha that was great...

I kinda liked "April Morning". (It's about the first battle of the War of Independence which occured in the morning of April 19, 1775.) I've never read "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Red Badge of Courage".

I read that book for my 7th grade social studies class. I really like history and liked that book. They said Jehovah somewhere in it too. I was young enough to be floored that other ppl actually knew God's name.

this happened to me too. it was in 6th grade though. my history book made mention of jehovah, all the apostles, and the plagues. i was amazed.

My present History book makes mention of Yahweh a lot..but it's got everything wrong. I hate it so much, it makes me very angry.

Really? What kind of history are you studying?

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

History of the Ancient World. It goes from the rise of civilization to right before the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire.

So have they been trying to teach you about things like the JEDP hypothesis or other crap like that? Or is it something else that they're getting wrong?

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

My prof isn't trying to teach my anything. It's just the book gets the history of the religion wrong completely, the basis of the bible wrong..and just pretty much the basis for monotheism.

This is why I _hated_ the first couple of humanities courses I had to take as a freshman. One of my professors wrote this book and it was required reading for the course he taught. I looked at it for a few seconds and never opened it again unless I wanted a good laugh. I think I ended up burning my copy at the end of the course. I don't think I would have passed that course if it weren't for the fact that the second half of the course was on Greek history and culture.
