Poets

I guess this fits better in here than any where else. It's not about books, but it is about writers. I am very into poetry and I was sitting here wondering if any of my fellow eZabelers shared my love. So I thought I would start this thread so we could talk about poetry. :)

Two of my FAVORITE poets are Gregory Corso and Allan Ginsberg. They are Beat Poets from the 50's or 60's I can't remember which one and they are amazing... they have very unconventional styles of writing and I think thats why I love them so much. Gregory Corso has this one poem called "Marrage" its really long so I won't post it but I highly suggest you look it up and read it. Its his own personal views on marrage, its hilarious. He talks about how a guy feels when he first meets the chicks parents and then best part is when hes talking about the honeymoon and he says:
"Niagara Falls! Hordes of us! Husbands! Wives! Flowers! Chocolates! All streaming into cozy hotels. All going to do the same thing tonight. The indifferent clerk he knowing what was going to happen. The lobby zombies they knowing what. The whistling elevator man he knowing. The winking bellboy knowing. Everybody knowing! I'd be almost inclined not to do anything! Stay up all night! Stare that hotel clerk in the eye! Screaming: I deny honeymoon! I deny honeymoon!"

I'm also into Emily Dickenson, Sylvia Path, Charles Bukowski, and a million others....haha ok, i'm done, any body else got something to say?

Poetry is like a window into the heart, soul or mind of people. I want to see through your eyes, stand in your shoes. How many here have their own works of poetry to give us links to?

Maybe someone should start a new thread for this...

Allen Ginsburg is one of my favorites. His Poems "America" and "Death to Van Goh's Ear" are my favorite. when i red this i was gonna write alen ginsberg, then i saw u already had it here! some of his stuff is a little questionable, tho, likethe except from "howl" that starts..." i saw the greatest minds of my generation something something..." lol i remember daria liked allen ginsburgh too, she read to that excerot frmo "howl" to an old lady one episode and the lady got all freaked out.

Another great poet is Octavio Paz. I read his stuff because he was mentioned a lot in the societiy's literature, because he's a historian also. I read some of his works from "sunstone", which are really good, some reflect mildy hindu sanskrit poetry.

oh man we did months on him in my spanish lit

ekulu #5.1.1 ekuluOG 2002

I read thia book by him, "In Light of India", and there was a a rather large section on Hindu erotic sanskrit poetry. It was pretty interesting, to saythe least. lol i dont reccomend it. But the book altogether is really good. He's an awesome writer. What did u read of his?

Another good Spanish author is Pablo Neruda. One of his poems inspired the Goo Goo Dolls' "Gutterflower" album title.

its beat poetry too. some of the best beats i have ever heard. i'll post some of it later but right now i'm off to work.

I love poetry too. I've read thousands of poems and really try to absorb what the poems mean. Some poetry (like any art) is junk. But there is some really great stuff out there. My favorite poets are most of the masters (like Robert Frost, Emily Dickenson, Poe, Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, of course Shakespeare). I read some obscure poetry too, but I can never remember title's or names. I like Ginsberg too. The Beatniks were the real hippies. Much respects to hippies, but the Beatniks did that antiestablishment, outside the box, a-little-off-the-beaten-path thing first, and they come across a little more sincere and inspired.

Sooooo, if I had to pick one poem I really adore, its "Death of the Hired of the Man" by Robert Frost. Melancholy, but wonderful.

thatdarngirl #2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I hate almost all poetry. Something about it bothers me. I do appreciate some of Robert Frost's poems as well as Emily Dickinson. I haven't read any by Sylvia Plath, I'd probably like her too.

yodasucka #2.1 yodasuckaOG 2003

Sylvia Path killed herself by putting her head in the oven... with her kids in the next room... that always made me love her so cool in my eyes.. i don't know... also, she wrote this whole long poem about how she was cutting carrots and she cut her finger... she was great...

thatdarngirl #2.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I love the Bell Jar..and I love her. That's a very interesting way to die.
