Our Guys
So, since I took my AP test for english... we basically have no more work to do for the rest of the year. We suggested just watching movies... but my teacher decided maybe that wasn't the best idea. So she ordered these books. It's called "Our Guys". It is about the 1989 rape of a mentally retarded teenager in Glen Ridge, NJ. We got the book on wednesday, and by fridays class, I had already read over 100 pages. I'm really enjoying it, well as much as you can enjoy a story about a rape. It's written EXTREMELY well and its really not only about the actully rape, but the events and mentality of the town that lead up to it. The entire town is obsessed with athletes and basically allowed them to get away with any thing because they were held up so highly. After the rape is discovered, the town even stands up for the boys instead of the poor girl.
Any ways, I didn't know this book exisisted and I'm sure some of you didn't either. I'm sure many of you were older then me in 89 and can prolly remember this incident if you lived in NJ at the time. But, yeah, its an interesting read and also is good for debating over (which we so LOVE to do on eZabel). My class is currently debating this whole should athletes get special treatment thing. It is proving to be very interesting since we have the caption of the football team in our class.... any ways, I highly recommend this book to any who are interested

Makes me think of the Laramie Project. The story that explored the brutal murder of that young gay guy.
yea she brought a class set of those too... and we were debating reading that but we voted on Our Guys cuz we thought we could use the discussion more cuz it hits closer to home... if we finish this book and have time still tho, we are gonna start The Laramie Project...
hey why must you always pick on the effeminate for people haha
Not fair. In my class she pretty much told us to sit down, shut up, and write our papers. We weren't allowed to talk at all.
On another note, this book sounds really good. I enjoy books that explore how others think/feel about things.
