Story of the Year
My brother purchased the newest Story of the Year album, a band i had heard of, but I had not heard any of their music. I didn't expect much from this band, but i was pleasantly surprised.
These guys rock. I love just about every song on the album. they are kind of a punk band, but remind me a lot of thrice, with 80's influential guitar solos (yeah, it's weird, but sounds good!). The album is called "In the Wake of Determination," and i strongly recomend it.

I just downloaded Story of the Year's 2 albums, and I like them so far. I can understand how you guys were saying they have an '80's influence; you can tell they listened to a lot of old school metal by the way they sing and let their harmonies carry. It's pretty good.
toooold you
hahahahahaha :)
Fooooooooooooooooooooled you!
lol... that's funny u got it, didn't think it would come thru in text
I have spaceballs on the brain.
i've got... never mind.

That's not where I got them, but I couldn't say for sure.
I love how i can write a few sentences, and have people heatedly aruing over it in minutes. I am the man!!!!
Must be the curly hair...
hmmm, yes i do have curly hair. that's very, very true. you know i never even noticed untill you just said that. that's weeeeeeiiiird!!!!

Ok Frodo...
whatever, your just jealous. you wish you had my hair.
For scrubbing my tub maybe...
YELLOW CARD
OH man What an AMAZING BAND. those guys are so good.
THE EPITOME of musical talent.
They have more talent in their pinkies than the whole world of musicians have collectively.
I love yellowcard. omg soo good omg
that's just one of the many great things aout my hair. honestly though, how any compliments do get on your hair daily. probably none (because your hair is ugly and it sucks). me on the other hand, i get many compliments on my hair. So QUIT HATING you carrot top goon!!!
A single tear rolls down my cheek...

i want one of those t-shirts
i don't understand the videos.. i don't have patience to sit through a guy talking on a megaphone, dumb
but it's funny to just tell people, you have bad taste in music
because pretty much everyone could say that to pretty much everyone else
haha
really, it's just music, after all
OH man these guys are terrible.
I'm not sure that 3 monkeys with 3 pots and two ladels and two midgets and 2 cowbells with 3 yamakas could play music any worse.
Ok...I listened to some clips of these guys...I'm not impressed at all...
I said it before, but this timeI think I mean it: spoken like an ignorant fool.
and like someone who doesn't actually play music to know the difference
You don't have to play music to know they suck. And if you must know I was in band for 4 years when I was in school, so I have a musical background.
haha, he said he was in band for four years at school. that is funny. as if middle school bands are the peak of musical talent.
That's funny, I thought you were still in middle school.....hahahaha....
ooooooooooooohhhhh!!!! He torched you!
no, i am not in middle school anymore. but wouldn't it be funny if i WAS!?!?!?
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
What would be funny about it? You'd be a midget. hahahaha....
sorry dude, they're just not good...
ok whatever dude you're mean and i don't respect your opinion goodbye
HATER!!!
btw - all in good fun and discussion, i'm not really mad
Ok you blonde hulk...LOL!!
Music needs to flow, and I don't feel as though that group does. I will admit, I heard one song from The Killers on the radio and it was decent. But every other Punk song I have heard was like a screeching chalkboard sound.
it's all taste though, i respect that rush is good but it just doesn't move me, therefore don't really care to listen to it
Yes, it is all taste. Musically, they blow most groups out of the water. But...alot of people can't stand Geddy Lee's voice. Everytime I'm at a baseball game they play a clip from one of their songs. So it shows their musical abilities are superior. vocals, maybe not.
So, because baseball fans like a song, it must be superior? Dude, you're not making yourself sound very intelligent.
My point is Rush knows how to play their instruments.
psst....the killers arent punk. altho i do dig them & they're one of those bands that're greater live. they're more old school new wave 80's.
whatever... I have no clue what you guys consider punk. Someone else said they were awhile back.
by the way Rush is horrible
Name a band who plays their instruments better. The next level up would be Pink Floyd.
you're just partial to classic rock....NEXXXXXT
Well more groups need to learn how to play like these guys do. Music shouldn't be a headache inducer.
hmm, YOU can say that, I can say that....but its not the case to many. Remember back in that day that form of music had their little brotherman in the corner screaming about that style of music being inane. lol
so just like beauty.....its in the eye of the beholder.
Well said. Just because a style of music isn't to one's liking, doesn't mean they lack talent. Talent is projected in different styles. For instance there's definately punk bands out there who can play intricate classic progressive rock music, but choose not to, because they have more fun doing songs with 3 power chords repeatedly. But, even if they couldn't play classic rock or whatever, still really doesn't mean they have less talent. It's like in sports. Just because a person plays one sport, doesn't mean he lacks being a talented sportsperson, because he doesn't play the sport that you may like. It's like a comparing apples with oranges type thing.
Beating on an intrument is not talent. My 6 year old could do that. That's like saying a bench player stacks up to a starter on a baseball team just because he can hit a ball too. For whatever reason kids today just like LOUD. Loud is not talent.
are you ignoring reason for the sake of argument?
*****cough***** ban him! *****cough****
I thought we were best friends. :o(
I'm saying the notes played by bands like Rush take more talent than notes played by Ska or whatever you guys call this genre of music. It's beyond who likes what at this point. Like whoever you want. But don't tell me Ska bands have an ounce of the same talent as Rush, Pink Floyd, Journey, Bon Jovi, U2. Those guys will always be remembered. Story of the Year and bands like that are easily forgotten. It's pub music, nothing more.
Lets use a baseball analogy. The groups I mentioned are like a class of player like Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle. The groups you guys like are like a class of player such as Ryan Langerhorns and Dan Wilson. Dimaggio and Mantle are legends. These other 2 guys are regular Joe Schmos that no one will remember except a statistician.
And yes Ian, this subject is a big Pet Peeve of mine.
he hasn't listened to it, so he doesn't know, yet he acts like he knows
dan dan dan dan DAN.... you're making yourself sound so silly because you are speaking out of ignorance. i have listened to the bands you like, i don't claim to know every subtle nuance about them but at least i have listened to them. meanwhile you are stating "facts" about bands you haven't even listened to just because it falls under a certain genre.
/bandfromsociety/02%20Blueprint%20Of%20The%20Fall.mp3
loud? yes
punk? yes
awesome? definitely
drummer as good as neil peart? maybe, but who cares! he's awesome
please tell me your 6 year old could open for this band, tell me that he could get on a stage and bang on a guitar and that people would like it. i don't expect everyone to like this kind of music, but don't say that they don't know how to play because that is just IG-NANT!!! don't speak of what you know nothing daaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I've heard you play Matt. I was 2 feet away from you guys in your parent's basement. You guys are ok. My point is this style of music is pub music. Easily forgotten.
i'm not saying i was good, i'm not good. they are though, i could never play like that. let it go dan, u can't change the world
hahahahahaha......I'll quit now, before I get beat up in the next sporting event that is played between congregations...hahahaha....
that's it i'm gonna killllll youuuuuuuuuu
You should be able to stuff me now that you can dunk. I'll be spitting teeth for sure... hahaha...
I'll listen to the clip when I get home. No sound card here at work.
seriously though, call neil peart on the phone. i bet you that he has heard of strung out and i bet HE thinks they're good. so it means you disagree with him, which proves my point that I'M RIGHT! I WIN!!!
COUNT IT!!
Neil Peart is my God. I must follow whatever he says. LOL!
The problem may be that John Hughes scarred me. I hated whatever he subjected me to.
hahaha... ok now i understand
all in all you wont get it cause you dont want to. you like a different style of music, everyone else here likes a different style too....and thats cool! just appreciate not everyone is alike & we can all learn something from one another.
i would say we should sit around in a circle and sing kumbaya... if i didn't think it was such a lame song... and possibly pagan
how about brotherman just buy us all cookies....cookies are love! lol
You want your cookies fedexed? haha
hahaha Too funny
wow, i like it a lot (the song)
it's strung out, one of the best progressive punk bands in existence. That particular CD is amazing, but most of their stuff is really really good. As much as I love their classic stuff, I think their newer albums are even better!
My favorite CD's by them are actually the 3 most recent ones featuring all new songs (they had a live cd that's amazing, too, but I'm not going to include that):
An American Paradox
The Element of Sonic Defiance (more like an EP)
Exile in Oblivion
Also, ever popular, is their Twisted By Design CD.

what is the name of the song?
blueprint of the fall
Playing something with complicated and numerous chord changes and what have you, just for sake of playing complicated and number chord changes, does not determine that it is more listenworthy than something that is more simplified. Talent is apparent when the band got across what they wanted to get across. "Loud" and "simple" is what is called for sometimes, to get across the emotion of why the song was set out to be created in the first place. And, I'm defending this, being a member in one band, that is probably closer to something you would like.
or listen to a johnny cash song, very simple, but usually cool in its own way
I thought about mentioning Johnny Cash too. Strange.
neither should you.
lol - man, Todd's on fire!
The almighty Todd has spoken...
Pink Floyd is also horrible
You have no class....
i like my pizza with pepperoni, meatball topping sucks!!
dude, give it up already!! stop trying to educate us!!! nobody cares what you music you like!!!
mmm, pizza
Everyone agrees. Thank you!
The blonde hulk flexes his muscles again...
i loooove story of the year! i like pretty much their whole first album...hmm, perhaps should check out some newer stuff.
Hmmm....80's guitar solos...need a clip...

I'd pick the clean ones.
The clean ones? you mean it's vulgar?
The cleans ones are edited. Like 90% of songs heard on the radio or mtv.
I'll listen to it when I get home.
"The Parental Advisory is a notice to consumers that recordings identified by this logo may contain strong language or depictions of violence, sex or substance abuse. Parental discretion is advised."
• Whether, in light of contemporary cultural morals and standards and the choices and views of individual parents, the recording might be one that parents may not want their child to listen to.
• Context is obviously important: some words, phrases, sounds, or descriptions might be offensive to parents if spotlighted or emphasized, but might not offend if merely part of the background or not a meaningful part of the lyrics.
• The context of the artist performing the material, as well as the expectations of the artist’s audience, is also important. In addition to profanity, “depictions of violence, sex, or substance abuse” must be considered when making a determination regarding the application of the Parental Advisory Label.
• Lyrics are often susceptible to varying interpretations. Words can have different meanings. Also, words cannot be viewed in isolation from the music that accompanies them. Lyrics when accompanied by loud and raucous music can be perceived differently than the same lyrics when accompanied by soft and soothing music.
• Labeling is not a science; it requires sensitivity and common sense. Context, frequency, and emphasis are obviously important; isolated or unintelligible references to certain material might be insufficient to warrant application of the label.
Are you a dictionary?
I told you about these guys like 6 months ago... lol
DONT DENY IT!!!!!!
They had a single on the radio like 3 years ago, buddy.
what radio is this? hicksville pa radio in between the steer auctions and manure sale commercials?
You're so lame. 3 years ago I lived in NJ and listened to a little station called KRock.
Bethlehem's a coo place anyway. And, The Flaming Lips are gonna be in Allentown in August! I'm going!
really?? what day? are there still tickets?? gmail me!
At croc rock?
Would you compare them to, say Strung Out or New Found Glory?
not really... more so strung out, but they're definitely more poppy. i would say thrice or popped up good riddance
Hmmm... I like strung out's hardnees, and I hate NFG particulary because they're so poppy. Maybe I should save my money.
they are kinda hard. It's pop, but hard pop.
yeah definitely edgy, catchy but edgy. they have a lot of really cool riff stuff and solo stuff, nfg doesn't really do any of that
Are the lyrics pretty interesting, or will it be like listening to an Ataris song, when I feel like an idiot for sining along?
From what I've heard so far, there are lots of repeated lyrics (chorus-y stuff). I don't really know what all the lyrics are about.
