To: Mike Doughty HQ

Two exciting pieces of Mike Doughty news to share with you all.

First of all, Mike Doughty has a new trio together, which will be
touring theaters and ballrooms nationwide in May. Mike will, of
course, be singing and playing guitar. Bill Gould, formerly of Faith
No More, is on bass; and legendary Journey drummer Steve Smith will
fill the percussion seat. Mike is also considering re-recording
"Skittish" with this ensemble, to be released as the soundtrack
to the next Wim Wenders film, "No Hope"; more on that soon.

Second, and perhaps even more important: from this point, on, Mike
Doughty will professionally be known as Mike Cougar Doughty. We'll
let Mike explain that one himself:

"It's complicated, but basically, over the last few years of touring
by myself and doing the solo singer-songwriter thing, I've really
gotten in touch with myself and who I am. And I came to believe
that, in order to represent myself to the world, and to be true
to the populist nature of my art, I should stop hiding my middle
name from the world and instead be proud of it and what it represents about me. I hope you like it."

To this end, this email newsletter will soon become known as "CougarList."
Keep an eye on Mike's website for a list of confirmed Mike Cougar
Doughty Band tour dates, and keep on small rockin'.

Piscataway,

Heh, in other words, the name worked for Mellancamp so why shouldn't it work for me!

Whoah, that didn't even cross my mind. You're quick on your toes with your thinking. But, no, I don't think that's the idea behind it. It probably didn't cross Doughty's mind either.

It just happens to be his middle name. And, each time Doughty gets more in touch with the "people" he's revealed another part of his name. Like, when Doughty was with Soul Coughing, he was widely referred to as "Doughty," mostly. Then, after Soul Coughing, he toured as "M. Doughty." After solo-ing for awhile, he decided to use "Mike Doughty." As if you thought it was over, his full name, Mike Cougar Doughty, was recently revealed with the advent of this new band of his.

But, the revealation of his full name isn't the bigger picture here. It's bigger news that he will once again be playing in a band setting, after like 4 years of doing things solo. And the band isn't just any band, he's got alumnus of Faith No More and almnus of Journey, which really struck me! I can't wait to hear the new band! And Soul Coughing will never be forgotten of course!

Why does it say Piscataway at the end?

theremin #1.1.1.1 thereminOG 2002

hahaha The Mike Doughty HQ always close their letters in a non-traditional matter. So, "Piscataway" used in this context would be a substitution for say like "Sincerely" or whathaveyou. I think I'll close some of my letters with "Piscataway!"

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004

I just thought that was weird since I live in Piscataway. Interesting....

theremin thereminOG 2002

Yeh, that's pret-ty nea-to. Piscataway rocks! I think the word "Piscataway" actually means "a high passable bank around a river bend."

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004

It was named for Chief Piscataway. And Metuchen was named for an indian, not sure if he was a Chief, but he died on the train passing through that area...if my memory serves me correctly.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Yes it was. But, I'm talking about what "Piscataway" means. I think the Piscataway Indians originated in Virginia, and had that name because of the topography of the land of which they were based. I'm actually Native American but can't speak more confidently about it, due to my lack of further knownledge than that. I'd hafta ask someone about anything further on the topic.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

that would be...dirivitive.

theremin thereminOG 2002

I think you mean "derivative." And, that still would be a negatory on that, Mister I-Think-I-Am-An-Etymologist. Substitution would be much more appropiate to say, since "Piscataway" does not in fact stem from your usual devoirs or any devoirs at all. Rather, 'tis a straight and clear substitution.

That mess aside, let's concentrate on the real subject matter at hand! (Said in my best Jerry Stiller voice)

Whatever, where's the beer?

theremin thereminOG 2002

Pint of Guinness please.

fivezero #1.2 fivezeroOG 2003

Thats the first thing I thought too. Ever hear of that punk band called John Couger Concentration Camp? Good stuff.

I'll give his new band a listen. I loved Faith No More, dug Soul Coughing and thought Journey didn't suck too bad.
