WHY I HATE EMO MUSIC AND ITS COMPANIONS

aviator by aviatorOG 2004 · Jul 10, 2004 · 225 views

Ok I hate emo music. You however may not. Of course there is an audience here that I am sure of feels this same way. I am tired of seeing all these new bands pop up with Mr Nasal Singer and really poor written lyrics. I have had enough of these bands like Dashboard Confessional, Story of the Year, and especially all these other bands who sort of ride on the borderline coat tails of this music such as Sum 41, Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. I am sorry but I have had enough of these crummy bands being signed and want to know where the good bands have gone. I mean where is the next Nirvana? Its been too many years that I have had to listen to this trash. THESE BANDS ARE MAKING ME SICK

all the bands on the poll suck equally

fivezero #4 fivezeroOG 2003

This post looks so silly. Makes me never want to trash people's music ever again. It's counter-productive. People enjoy music that I don't and vice versa. Lets get over it.

I have the apple jacks approach. I eat what I like.

good post.

rumur #3 rumurOG 2004

I cant stand these bands, but there is something about Yellowcard. I dig them.

superhero #2 superheroOG 2004

nirvana sucked. that dude was super whiny.

jamiephaser #2.1 jamiephaserOG 2003

Nirvana didnt suck you gotta be crazy, maybe wasn't your type of music but they didnt suck. His voice was whiny cause he had real bad stomach problems. Also kurts vocie was described as distorted and raw not whiny.

Whiny is saves the day. Who are you just curious where are you from.

aviator #2.1.1 aviatorOG 2004

now now children. each of you are entitled to your opinion here. However I do agree heavily with Jamiephasers argument here. However if anyone says Nirvana is whiney to defend emo music, that is an oxymoron. Emo's signature singers for a majority are whiney.

superhero #2.1.2 superheroOG 2004

i don't care HOW it was described, he just WAS whiny. crying about drugs into a microphone isn't necessarily emo, but it's still lame.

nirvana's greatness came from their ability to convince everyone to wear dirty, grimy, clothes and make it a fashion statement. WHY ALL THE FLANNEL. I don't understand. So lame.

aviator #2.1.2.1 aviatorOG 2004

ok that is completely falsified. Kurt's music was not "ALL" about drugs. Read his journals. He had a fixation on the impulses of teen angst in the beginning of his musical career. However his music started being drawn towards issues like racism, sexism, politics, and his invasion of privacy. Kurt was not an outgoing person and his lonely infatuation is a big thing that drew others to his music because he spoke about it. The flannel clothes and all ripped jeans and all that other fashion stuff was just the clothing he was accustomed to wearing growing up in the Pacific Northwest. Look at a lot of the original bands such as Green River, Mudhoney or The Melvins and you will see that the music created there was not about a fashion statement. It was just a reaction to the crummy 80's spandex rock bands that were out. The roots of that music is heavily in bands from the late 60's and 70's such as Led Zepellin, The Ramones, Beatles, and the band Alice in Chains were actually heavily rooted in country music.

Ooh, I still love Green River. Whenever I put Temple of the Dog or Mother Love Bone in my CD player, I can't get them out for like, months.

superhero superheroOG 2004

i liked nirvana, that was the last band to bring on a change. now all the bands are all repeats, etc.

modestjesse #2.3 modestjesseOG 2004

In my mind Nirvana was over rated. Maybe I'm just bias cause I don't think Corgan got the recognition he deserved sitting in Nirvana's shadow. I also related to Pumpkins music more then Nirvana's. I don't think of flannel when I think of Nirvana, that's more for Pearl Jam who I felt defined grunge a bit more.

And not all of Nirvana's stuff was about drugs. The guy could write and there was some talented musicians with him. I just think Kobain was over rated.

jamiephaser #2.3.1 jamiephaserOG 2003

No it wasnt all about drugs I can show you many of his songs and lyrics that wreren't. Your probaly not a big nirvana fan so your statement was based on surface knowledge. He did have songs about drugs that very true.

Smashing pumpkins were a different kind of music, Meaning when I listen to nirvana and pumpkins they both gave me different feelings and directions. They pretty much had the same fan base.

Corgan deffiently got his props, he has a whole generation that where inspired and will keep listening to him till the day they die. I know alot more people that like the pumpkins then dont.

They are awesome though I am a big pumpkins fan. Corgan was coming from a different direction then Kurt was.

If you wanna get technical about it bands like pixies, mudhoney and nirvana where the dawn of grunges popularity. Grunge as alwyas been around its called hard rock. If sabath came out in the 90's they would call it grunge.

But they call it metal cause ozzy is associtaed with it. Cause there is no way black sabbath's sound would be called metal by todays standard, if they came out today.

aviator #2.3.1.1 aviatorOG 2004

haha wow. Well I mean impressive is the knowledge of Jphaser on this. Anyways I am going to say that i agree with him. Pearl Jam I wouldn't call flannel. I think the whole flannel thing started when they got all these imitations of Pearl Jam such as Seven Mary Three, Candlebox etc... I mean I like those bands too but I guess if you know the history you see all kinds of different music blended. I mean for crying out loud. Jack Irons recruited Eddie Vedder for Pearl Jam. Irons was in the Red Hot Chili Peppers and then in mid 90's became PJ's drummer. When he found Eddie, Eddie was in Cali in a band with Brad Wilk the drummer from Rage Against The Machine and now Audioslave with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden who was also in Temple of the Dog with Eddie Vedder. Yeah that sounds confusing but those guys all jammed together back then. They all had different styles. The whole PJ Nirvana feud was because Gossard and Ament were in Mother Love Bone which sounded 80's hair band like and had a flabuoyant singer Andrew Wood. However previous to that band those 2 were in Green River with Arm and Turner from Mudhoney. So thats how this all spilled out in the early 90's.

Read Jesse's comment again, he said not all their songs were about drugs.

modestjesse #1 modestjesseOG 2004

Define emo.

fivezero #1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

Haha.

modestjesse #1.1.1 modestjesseOG 2004

I'm sorry, I can't keep up with music today. I was just talking to a DJ at the local radio station about this yesterday. He was asking me what I listen to and I was like, I don't know. I have no idea what categories my music falls into today. He started asking me about 'trance'. What the heck is that? He said dance music. What happened to when dance music was either 'club' or 'house'?

I listen to music. What kind? Everything but gangsta rap and country. From Sinatra to Streisand. Pumpkins to Poe. Cursive to Cure. Ministry to Method Man.

fivezero #1.1.1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

Word.
