Sellouts
What bands are sell outs? I personally will never appoint a band a "sell out", I hate the word. I don't know why people can blame the bands for trying to capitalize on their talent. And what really gets me is how people get so angry when a band changes its style. Bands do progress, deal with it. The reason people are disapointed by a band's new "sound" is because they became fans of the band before, when they sounded like what the person wanted, and change is never good. I think that people should really lay off bands, blaming them, almost, for being on MTV. Like you wouldn't get national exposure if you were offered? For instance, I have been a big Midtown fan for years, and now they have signed with Columbia, and are featured in the Spiderman 2 soundtrack and will be on Madden 2005. I am very happy for them. They are finally getting what they deserve and are still making great music. Same with The Ataris and their breakthrough last year.

I hate screamo reggae. I went through the baggage carousel room today and they were blasting it and it sounded like I was in a detention facility for murderers
ehh the worst bands are emo. Nuff said.
I think the bands that make music because they love it, not to get paid for it, are the best ones. It's nice to make a living doing what you love, but once it becomes your living, it's just that: a job. You stop loving it and start doing it because someone's paying you. A band like the Vandals, for instance, will never be in that position because they all love the music they make and don't care if they get paid to make it or not. When you see bands on MTV talking about how they've been playing together in a garage since they were 14, dreaming about the day they'd be on MTV and make millions, those are sell outs. I hate those bands.
I don't even like Good Charlotte, I don't have any of their albums, and I am not a big Sum 41 fan, although I do like listening to them at times and own an album. But I still respect their music and don't really care whether they are on MTV or not...
reel big fish says it well:
you're gonna go to the record store, you're gonna
give 'em all your money, radio plays what they want
you to hear, they tell me it's cool, but i just don't
believe it
sell out, with me oh yea, sell out
with me tonight, the records company's gonna give me
lots of money and everything's gonna be.
I have never been a reel big fish fan but they always done thier own thing, i giove them props for that
when we went to see reel big fish, the one guy was makin all these sarcastic remarks about his big huge tour bus where he sleeps in his gucci pj's and sneezes into $100 bills. it was funny.
see the problem here is you like sellouts
TooFat4Spandex has totally sold out. They used to be really cool but ever since they got on MTV they've been dressing like Avril Lavine and singing like Dolly Parton.
I find No Doubt quite annoying.
Still though, while Good Charlotte is a band that many criticize for "selling out," but I really believe that it's only because they are so popular on MTV. Can you blame a band for making addicting music? I bet they could make the SAME EXACT ALBUM, and if they weren't on the radio or MTV, the same people who hate them would listen to them. Like Sum 41. A few years ago, "Fat Lip" was the cool song, then when it got voted high enough on MTV, everyone called Sum 41 sellouts.
Yeah your probably right, it's amazing how people perceptions of bands change once they thing they have "sold out."
I will say some bands def get called sellouts prematurely, and its true just cause you get on mtv doesnt mean your a sell out.
I was jking not all the bands you like jp are sell outs, but good charllotte isnt a sell out its just that thier music has gotten worse each albumn. I used to like them.
That last song they released was a cheesy 80s remake with goth piano.
And what band wears thier own tshirts and clothing line real lame real lame.
You become a sellout when you base your music on a marketing startegy and thats when it becomes about the money and not the music anymore, ie you are a cooperate sellout.
If good charlotte is a sellout i dont know but they are suspect.
i know this first hand, so i can say this....No Doubt. there was a local radio station called KIIS that Rick Dees was a DJ for. EVERYONE who's ANYONE hated that station back in the day (even so now that ryan seacrest is the main DJ) it was the lamest by far....anyway, when the gang would practice they would dream about their music being played on radio stations, selling out arena's etcand they always swore they'd commit suicide if their music ever became so mainstream that they were played on KIIS FM.
BUT like JP said, money rules life of entertainers and guess where our dear friends are being played on regular rotation and have free concerts, wango tango concerts (for KIIS)....YES my dear old friends NO DOUBT
I find No Doubt to the just so annoying.
why? gwen has such an amazing voice.
Actually I find her voice very annoying, that's why I've never been a fan of No Doubt.
AW MAN, really?
oh well, thatss your opinion and i respect that!
I find gwen dangersouly hot
I think the argument for hating those "sellout" bands is that you come to hate the band you once loved. Whether they change their style or sign with a major label and get tons of MTV airtime, you liked them for a reason. It may have been because of their originality, but that will eventually be erased by the fact that a label can pay the band to make the music that the label wants to hear. I think, though, as long as the band is true to itself and doesnt compromise as far as their music goes, then whoever calls them a sellout can take a flying leap.
I couldnt agree more that should be marked informative
thank ya kind sir!
In the words of Gene Simmons, regarding KISS, "yeah, we're sell outs. We sell out every night."
I can't stand when people critise these bands for 'selling out'. I'm hearing that now with Modest Mouse because they're finally getting 'main stream' radio play and they're on MTV. Honestly, I'm not thrilled cause now all the kids that I can't stand at concerts have discovered them and they'll be out there. But I'm happy for the band to finally get the recoginition they deserve.
That's my two cents.
hmm. Well it kind of sucked when Chevelle landed their second album with Epic Records and everyone went crazy for The Red. I mean Point #1 to me was an amazing album and like I would tell people about how good Chevelle was and then they got big with the new album and everyone was all "Oh Chevelle is so awesome and influential". But hey thats my two cents. I guess its that kind of feeling where something unique is taken from you and turned corporate. I hate corporations. I work in this department with this guy I can't stand. He is the TRENDIEST, PREPPIEST White guy ever. I mean if its popular he likes it. He thinks hes into underground music cause he listens to Liz Phair. Oh COME ON. I mean this guy is preppy to a tee. Hes got the khaki pants, the beach condo, and the gf he cant stand and is never gonna get married but he has her so he can say hes got a gf. Hes got a masters degree but hes got no practical knowledge and this is the type of person that I think really needs to be deported to Connecticut or something.
Yeah your right modest mouse isnt sellouts. But Kiss are the deffintion of sellouts thats all they set out to be. The dude sells signed toilet paper. They are not about quality music, they are all about money. You see led zeplin whoring themselves out like that or acdc nope never.
