Soundtracks

originalsnob by originalsnobOG 2004 · Aug 9, 2004 · 347 views

So I'm developing a soundtrack for this movie.
It should be something original... not just random ripped tracks.
There is a lot to be said for the power of music.
In movies and shows music sets different moods, identifies characters or themes, and it keeps you envolved in the plot.
This is definately going to be a challenge but, I'll see what happens.

Here are a few soundtracks I found noteworthy:

Newsies -

ClUELESS-

Orange County-

Smallville-

Spiderman-

Ok in all seriousness, you should pick some bands that have albums but are not that well known. That way you'll get some quality songs and promotion, but at not the high cost...

fivezero #13.1 fivezeroOG 2003

This is wise. It's unrealistic for an indie movie production to think they'll get anything popular or well known. Try for someone up and coming, someone who needs a break. try to sell them on the notion that your movie will be the way they break into the industry. Also you could try some music major college students with lots of computer equipment and musical know-how to mock up an inexpensive score. Either that or go completely obscure and get atiquated music that you'll probably get for free. Also never underestimate the acoustic guitar. I've seen great films entirely tracked with acoustic songs by ONE guy. Be creative. Don't think you're gonna get anything pop and don't think it's going to work if you do, because nine times out of ten pop songs DON'T work in movies.

Realistically, I don't know how serious this production is and how big the viewing base will be. You could always just swipe the music and hope you never hear anything about it.

I also think it's pretty important for the writer of the scenes to have music in mind WHILE writing the scene! So, he can line up the lyrics, get the timing right and make sure it paces properly. I'm always affected when a piece of music moves with the scene. When the chorus hits at the right time or when the tempo picks up at the right point in the scene. I love that.

malibu #12 malibuOG 2001

so i bought the dirty dancing 2 havana nights soundtrack last nite. i know, i know. this really punk kid helped me pick it out and i told him i knew how ghey i was being but he told me it was okay. it's sooo good. cuban music with soul and even all the songs in spanish are so gorgeous and i sing em all.

originalsnob #12.1 originalsnobOG 2004

me encanta el ritmo de la musica cubano o cualquier cosa de la musica AFRO CUBANO!

fivezero #12.2 fivezeroOG 2003

look Deigo Luna doesn't sing any of the songs. you bought the CD because he's on the cover. he kinda looks like a young homeless person. i'm sure the music is awesome tho.

malibu #12.2.1 malibuOG 2001

of course he doesn't sing. he dances. i thought he was ugly too but then when i finished the movie i was in love with him. he's got all these other awesome movies coming out and i can't wait to see them. "solo dios sabe" y three football movies that look soooo good. but i read an interview with him about how he only dances after he has tequila.

malibu #12.2.1.1 malibuOG 2001

and by football i mean soccer movies.

hunkpapap #12.3 hunkpapapOG 2003

the royal tenenbaums very very good- theres an awesoem elliot smith song on there(needle int he hay)

fivezero #11.1 fivezeroOG 2003

One of my favorite movies of all time. LOVED IT. The song, Needle in the Hay, compliments the scene it's in so well. Gave me shivers. I play that song when I'm shaving a lot.

I love Newsies!!

I think I'd have to recommend the Mulan soundtrack
"I'll make a man out of yooooouuuuu"

superhero #9.1 superheroOG 2004

i love mulan as well, although i haven't seen it in a long time.

*mulan featured the first disney character with nipples...as seen here

sunshyne #9.1.1 sunshyneOG 2004

man nipples are just vetigial breasts from when you fellas were in the womb and it could have gone either way. interesting that you find that entertaining.

suchgr8heights #9.1.2 suchgr8heightsOG 2003

aviator #7 aviatorOG 2004

Where is Singles?

sunshyne #6 sunshyneOG 2004

i guess i hav a dif preference than most ppl on this site, from what ive seen. i love the song choices on the ally mcbeal soundtrack. however, im not a big fan of vonda shepard so oftentimes i play it really low and try to drown her out by singing really loud. not much of an improvement if anyone is in the car with me, but i enjoy it.

also, i like the love and basketball soundtrack. its got an awesome cover of holding back the years by angie stone. plus this sweet song: complete beloved by black eyed peas ft. les nubians (hook sung in french and english), a few songs from my youth and a couple of classics: love and happiness by al green and sweet thing by chaka khan.

snaps on the clueless soundtrack. its my fav movie. anything about it is fine with me.

fivezero #5 fivezeroOG 2003

all of these aren't what i call noteworthy. quite corporate.
the Lost in Translation sndtrck is amazing. Enternal Sunshine of the Spotless Minds sndtrck is really good. Lots of original scoring by Jon Brion. the Magnolia sndtrck is very good. Lots of stuff by Aimee Mann. Death in Vegas, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, Moby and even Fatboy Slim are good for soundtracks. What's the tone of the movie? What demographic are you's trying to appeal to? What genre do you think it'll fall under? Answer that and I'll have more input.

originalsnob #5.1 originalsnobOG 2004

The tone well... it's a psychological thriller.
The demographic/target audience hmmmm from 18 to 20 somethings.
It's a perspective piece something that makes you think.
Genre: hmmmm I'll say primarily alternative

fivezero #5.1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

idealy, if you had all the clout and pull in the world, what famous name would you have direct? who would you have star? who would you say you're trying to emulate, if anyone? where has inspiration been derived?

originalsnob #5.1.1.1 originalsnobOG 2004

Hmmmmmmm director David Nutter or Robert Rodriguez definately leaning towards Rodriguez. Ummm Christina Milan would be ideal, or Zoe Saldana. I don't really want to emulate anyone I'd want to do my own thing and hopefully it would become my style my trade mark.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

Rodriguez! Interesting. Then rock songs would work, maybe a couple techno tracks, then throw in some spanish music and thats that! maybe a lil scoring, some strings to bridge the scenes and during exterior establishing shots.

yay yayOG 2004

i put your ideas on a website and sold them for hundres of dollars

originalsnob originalsnobOG 2004

??? not quite sure I follow.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

he keeds he keeds

originalsnob #4 originalsnobOG 2004

Awww, their noteworthy to me because they're the kind of songs that pop into your head while you're driving down the road.

hunkpapap #3 hunkpapapOG 2003

the can't hardly wait soundtrack was great..

superhero #2 superheroOG 2004

what the...what makes these noteworthy? They were just random "carson daly thinks they're popular" songs, whatever was on the radio at the time

look at something that mixes old stuff with new...or better yet...find the most OBSCURE song by a popular band, or a rare version, and use that...

hunkpapap #1 hunkpapapOG 2003

you should have Band from Society play a track...

superhero #1.1 superheroOG 2004

that drummer is amazing...

hunkpapap #1.1.1 hunkpapapOG 2003

unless you're talking poker game...
