OK, here's a few links I saw for getting the NT password:
NTPasswd: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
Knoppix-STD: http://www.knoppix-std.org/
SAMInside: http://www.insidepro.com/eng/saminside.shtml
LC 5: http://www.atstake.com/products/lc/
NTPasswd looks like the easiest way. Burn the CD bootdisk, follow the directions on the web-site.
Knoppix-STD is full Linux system on bootable CD with some hacking utilities. you put the CD in, boot the machine, and the Linux operating system boots off the CD. I don't know what utilities come with the CD, but I'm sure their web-site can help out with that.
we think twas an act of sabotage by an employee who is "no longer with us"
you know, you can look into that computer's Event Viewer in the Security tab, and hopefully see when the password was changed.
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Security
Ha! I did that when I left my last job. The best part is that they never figured out it was me - they thought the tech guy did it. ;) So evil.
oh man, hehe that's beat
if it comes down to not knowing the password, you will have to slave the drive to another win2k system to get data off it
boss over shoulder. watch out.
do you guys know the Administrator password?
if you can login as Administrator, you can reset your boss's password.
OR, hm, depending on how your office is setup, you may have your network admin guy just reset his password over the network.
its a whole computer password, not the network login
on the login screen, do you see a domain? or just username and password?
just username and password
well, ask around for what the Administrator password may be.
Every windows 2000 machine has a default user called "Administrator". Ask if your boss knows it. If he doesn't check with some computer people there.
If you can't find anybody that knows it, it's worth trying a few guesses. Try username: Administrator and a blank password, 12345, etc.
If you can't get into the machine as Administrator, there are ways of resetting the Administrator password, but it's risky.
we have no computer ppl.
we might like to be risky.
I always liked:
username: administrator
password: administrator
that's the way my job does it..so much easier.
