Windows 2000 Won't Shut Down
by Ok, this is happening on my mom's Dell laptop, P3 900 mghtz, 128 Mb of RAM. Windows 2000...when she goes to Start/Shut Down, it acts like it's going to shut down, then goes back to the desktop and does nothing.
I haven't had a chance to look at it, but I'm not 100% sure where to even start...suggestions?

ctl-alt-del --> task manager --> processes tab --> sort by CPU time (click the "CPU" heading)
see if there's a process that's hanging. if there is, write down the name of the process. now right-click the process and "set priority" to "low". see if that let's the system shut down.
once you have the name of the process, do a search for that file and try to determine what it is. it could be an app that wasn't fully installed/uninstalled.

youre going to have to take out the hard drive. open it up. solder it to your eyeball. then reload windows.

I had that problem like 2 years ago. It just wouldn't shut down. In my case it was a virus. A trojan. Ask her if she downloaded anything lately...i got mine through a friend, so maybe she fell for the same thing.
