Mp3 Server

superhero by superheroOG 2004 · Aug 29, 2005 · 114 views

Question - I'd like to set up an mp3 server for my new place, when I move out - the mp3 server would just quietly sit, and not be touched. Only add mp3s to it over the network.

Can I connect my Ipod to my laptop and drop files on it from the server? That should work unless there is some weird DRM/Network Sharing Protection from ITunes?

yo, mike and ian - what the HECK are you talking about?

Mike - I plan on having a Win XP home box with NOTHING else on it but MP3s. If that means it's an MP3 server according to the Schiano definition of the word - great. Wireless speed is a non issue. I'm not sharing with any neighbors.

Ian - all I need to do is map the drive, right? End of story. Map it and ITunes.

As far as I'm concerned, the ftp IS an mp3 server ..

take that extra drive, slave it on your current PC, map yoru current PC drive

What do you want out of it that you can't get by just keeping the MP3s on your PC?

superhero #1.1 superheroOG 2004

uh, i do want to keep the mp3s on my pc ... and sync using my laptop. the PC doesn't have enough USB ports, stupidly enough .... and is prone to crashing under moderate use. but the hard drive is bigger than my laptop.

Oh, ok. Just map a drive to the other computer with the MP3s on it. Then drop them into iTunes. Works no problem.

um, having an mp3 server is cooler then mapping a drive... ians just mad he cant do that...

But in all seriousness, you running wireless in ur place? B or G? Running B with neighbors you will have latency issues. Say if your host pc with the music is in one end of the house and ur laptop is with you in the bathroom on the otherside, you will get intermittent lag and such. OR if ur lovely wife to be is using the host machine for heavy duty processor work, IE photo editing or whatever you will experience lag as well. Server that is centeralized and a dedicated broadcasting server would def work and be cooler.

you said, like, a lot of stuff, but, like... you didn't say anything at all. that's pretty sad dude.

true, TLDR, RockSupastar knows his wireless junk...

having a server storing mp3's that you can remote desktop into has a advantage in a wireless enviroment. hence, in the above stated question of "should i get a mp3 server" i would respond with a "HECK YEAH"!!! in my best Napoleon voice. Mapping a drive is an advantage for data in a corporate enviroment, network drives are so 97, get with it Zabel... its all about remote storage now adays.

Wow, this is a surprising insightful and intellegent statment. I wish I had your understanding of network design and wireless connectivity!

We have a dedicated server... jealous???

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

well according to ian, that is a huge waste of time and money, lol.

iwz iwz

Haha, I never said that, brah.

An MP3 server is a great idea. Especially if it's hooked up wirelessly to your network. BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO MAP A DRIVE IF YOU WANT TO USE IT WITH iTUNES!

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

dude... give it up with this whole drive mapping thing....
