What to do with a GameCube

deanh77 by deanh77Founder · Aug 25, 2003 · 371 views

My brother-in-law was nice enough to give me his GameCube as a wedding present, I'm a little out of the loop as I haven't had a console since I sold my Playstation (one) like 3 years ago. So what are the hot games? Is getting a Network/Broadband adaptor worth it? what games work online?

I saw a video where a dude was playing a regular DVD or CD on a hacked gamecube, not sure if the software was hacked, just looked like the casing was off. See if I can find more info

That'd be a reason to buy it. Costumize. That's one of GC weakest links, no DVD. Would a regular sized disc fit in it, since the discs are so small?

yay #8.1.1 yayOG 2004

So I looked up on this. There's a new mod chip being worked out by the same fellas that did the PS2 one and supposedly it will enable loading of home brewed DVDs.

You can hack GC to take linux, or you can develop on it with a lot of different libraries but I'm just not interested in that these days.

the only way to get stuff to run on it (AFAIK) is through the net port and a copy of Fantasy Star Online. I don't remember the details, and I don't really have time for this anymore. I'm busy hacking my townhouse.

yay yayOG 2004

yeah the PSO loader, theres like back door using the ethernet adapter or something, bah not interested

I don't know if its the same one, but there's a video going around for like the last 2 years of someone playing a burned (dvd-r) game on a gamecube. no one knows if its real.

some people got a small linux kernel and postgreSQL database to run on one. go figure. These aren't very hackable. I've moved on to bigger things. I'm making a TIVO.

nice!! using mythtv?

deanh77 #7.1.1 deanh77Founder

not sure yet. still building the computer itself. might try to build my own case. maybe.

iwz #7.1.1.1 iwz

have you seen some of the cases you can get now? so awesome. they look like actual electronics devices.

the shuttles are very nice too.

you should definitely set it up so that you have 2 tv tuners in there. like an ATI All-in-wonder, and an extra tuner card. MythTV and a bunch of the others out there support multiple tuners.

hunkpapap #6 hunkpapapOG 2003 stupid

i was thinking, other things you can do with the gamecube involve: a sledgehammer(like smash bros), or an m-80....

hunkpapap #6.1 hunkpapapOG 2003

OH, or a shotgun, or your front tires...

rocksupastar #5 rocksupastarFounder

any star wars game...

guilderbellsuck #5.1 guilderbellsuckOG 2003

rocksupastar #5.1.1 rocksupastarFounder

yes really... star wars games are the BOMB

bozo #4 bozoFounder

From what i understand.... Any Lord Of the Ring game and/or Mario Kart:Double Dash. The Hobbit is supposed to be big too

skaorsk8 #4.1 skaorsk8OG 2002 offtopic

i wish they would come out iwth some mario kart for xbox...ehhhh...

deanh77 #4.1.1 deanh77Founder

I used to play mario kart on my N64 emulator (UltraHLE) with a N64 controller I hooked up to my computer.(soldering skillz come in handy sometimes). good times.

skaorsk8 #4.1.1.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

woah..that's impressive. you did on a USB port??

deanh77 deanh77Founder

nope parallel port, with a wire going to another port for power. (my parallel port didn't supply enough.) This is the site I got the plans at: http://www.st-hans.de/N64.htm Those were the days, I had so much fun doing that stuff.

bozo #4.1.2 bozoFounder

i could get the emulator for it... then you could come over and watch me on my modded box.

deanh77 #4.1.2.1 deanh77Founder

ian, says you've got the emulator, all you need is the ROM, I've got it and a bunch of others somewhere, maybe I'll upload them to the ftp.

bozo bozoFounder

yeah well ian is a little picky, you got my point right? haha

skaorsk8 #3 skaorsk8OG 2002

dude....ian doesn't need a gamecube...HOURSSSSSSSS....AHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAH

deanh77 #3.1 deanh77Founder

yeah, I've only managed to play the GameCube for a grand total of 15 minutes.

togatweeter #2 togatweeterOG 2003

I agree with Ian's suggestions. Smash Bros is my fave!

fivezero #2.1 fivezeroOG 2003

i love the original one for N64. i was the grand puba at that game [fox]. i never really got into the new one. it does look beautiful tho. sooo shiny, almost too shiny...

togatweeter #2.1.1 togatweeterOG 2003

hehe cool. fox is incredibly fast. but my fave is link. swords are my specialty

fivezero #2.1.1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

link is fun to use but he's too fat and slow and his recovery is crap. but in the new smash brothers game--he's really good

iwz #1 iwz

Only like 1 game works with the network adapter: Phantasy Star Online. I hear it's pretty fun.

Must have games:

Zelda: The Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Mario Sunshine
Super Monkley Ball 1/2
Mario Golf
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Animal Crossing

Big games coming out soon:
Soul Caliber II (if you like fighting games)
F-Zero GX
Viewtiful Joe

Pikmin is a short puzzle game that's definitely worth a rent.

deanh77 #1.1 deanh77Founder

interesting. thanks. He gave me the Two Towers game, which is pretty cool.

modestjesse #1.2 modestjesseOG 2004

Viewtiful Joe was rated one of the best games out there. So check it out.

Prince of Persia is really good as is MVP Baseball 2004. Monkeyball 2 is a great party game or puzzle game for yourself.

Stay away from Animal Crossing, you like daylight, remember that. ;)

iwz #1.2.1 iwz

viewtiful joe is coming down to $20 too, nintendo player's choice.

modestjesse #1.2.1.1 modestjesseOG 2004

Cool, I'm glad I didn't buy it yet. Do you know when it's dropping?

iwz iwz

whoops. I was wrong. Mixed it up with F-Zero GX I guess. I saw Viewtiful Joe for $20 used the other day though.

Anyway, here's what i was talking about
http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=5141

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004

Viewtiful Joe is going for $30 new now, so I picked it up. I probably won't play it until I move though because I don't have my GC hooked up at the moment.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

all of you knock if off and pick up Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. you'll be blown away.

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004

I heard it's supposed to be incredible. But I'm not allowing myself to purchase any more games until Halo 2 is out. So that will be never! :P

iwz iwz

i want to get that. i never played any of the MGS games. good stuff?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

PERFECT TIME to jump aboard. Twin Snakes takes the first MGS game [originally for PS1] and tweaks the story and updates the game technology. Beat this and then play MGS2: Sons of Liberty. Then you'll be all caught up for MGS3: Snake Eater, that'll be out late this year. It's said: the ceator, Hideo Kojima, and the art director, Yoji Shinkawa, will be hanging it up after this game and subsequent releases probably won't be worsth playing.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 fivezero

i can't endorse these games enough. you'll never play a game with a more captivating story. it's all very cinematic too. beautiful stuff.

deanh77 #1.2.2 deanh77Founder

I just got Metroid Prime at a going-out-of-business sale. and I'm thinking about Viewtiful Joe.
