XP Messenger Service Pop-Ups

theremin by thereminOG 2002 · Aug 25, 2003 · 86 views

One the most annoying things... especially since most of them ironically consist of advertisments for Web sites to go to, for Messenger blockers. How do I turn off "Messenger Service?" I don't need special blocker software for it, or do I? Thanks in advance, People's Republic of Geek Chat.

win2k has this problem as well. any version of windows that has the Messenger service, and is exposed to the internet has the problem actually. the Messenger service is what allows you to receive "net send" messages.

Just go into your Services Control Panel (It's under Admin Tools), find the Service called Messenger, go into its properties, and change the startup mode to Disabled. Then stop the service too.

Just enable the XP firewall. I prefer McAfee's Personal Firewall, because it has more filtering options, and its easier to allow file sharing programs such as WinMX, Soulseek, and Kazaa Lite to actually connect. But if you just want to get rid of those ANNOYING pop-ups, enabling the XP firewall in your Network Connection properties should work just fine.
