I'm debating about getting a new computer. I'm currently running a P4 1.3 GHz desktop and a 333 Celeron as my backup. I was originally thinking about getting an Alienware Area 51M but since I've bought my iPod I've been impressed with what Apple has to offer. So this has me thinking about a G4 Powerbook. Any Mac users here?
Anyone know the comparrisons between a G4 and an Intel or AMD processor that's similar?
I'm going to be getting away from gaming on the PC so it wouldn't hurt me to get a Mac in that regard.

anyone wanna buy my laptop for like 800 bucks... 1.3 ghz. 20gb, xp... i dont know
Alright here's an off topic question. I was watching The Screen Savers last night on TechTV and they were talking about video cards and processor speeds. I never realized that a video card, no matter how great it is, will only be as fast as your processor will allow it, well that's how I understood it.
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB card. Should I upgrade my 1.3 chip, and what would I need to find out about my mother board in order to do that?
yeah dude your CPU is definitely limiting that 9800 Pro. That's a sweet video card.
To find out what cpus your motherboard supports, you can look up it's product page on the manufacturers website. They often release new BIOS udpates that will support faster CPUs (within the same family).
Virtual PC allows you to run windows apps on the Mac, but it hogs a lot of the memory. I'm not really worried about software. iLife seems to have just about everything you need, and Microsoft Office is available for Macs.
My only problem is I just got my hands on the Macromedia suite and I don't know how fortunate I'd be to find a cracked Mac copy anywhere.
I've priced out building an aleinware clone before but I don't want a desktop, I want something I can take on vacation with me, or where ever.
What's a G4 compared to an Intel chip? Is a G4 1.3 GhZ processor faster then a Pentium 1.3?
That's a long and complex discussion. But, I'd say yes, a G4 @ 1.3ghz is faster than a P4 @ 1.3ghz.
I guess the real question is, since you won't be playing games anymore, how much does speed matter? A 1.3ghz anything would probably be fast enough for you.
hmm i would like to sit in on that conversation.
For an explanation of the architecture differences:

For some benchmarks comparing the G4 @ 1.4ghz and the P4 @ 3ghz among others, check here:

It's hard to compare Apple processors to Intel/AMD processors because they work so differently.
It also depends on the application. You'll notice on page two of those benchmarks that the Pentiums kick butt compared to the G4s when running games on the 9800 chipset.
yeah, its like comparing apples to.. umm.. pcs
WOWWWWWWW that was a NERD JOKE!! HAHAHAHHA
haha dude you just scored a +1 Witty Level Increase!
good one
I'm sorely dissapointed that Funky didn't respond with a "ZIIINNGG!"
hahaha, best computer joke i've heard all day...umm, year
The G4s are of course really nice. But it's still a mac, so you have to think about software and stuff. You won't just be able to install your copy of office on it or whatever.
Also, Alienware pcs really are overpriced and sold for their "cool" factor. You can build a kick butt pc for a lot less.
