MythTV
I got a little MythTV box set up.. finally. it took a couple tries. I used the KnoppMyth distro. so cool. installs debian linux minimal install + MythTV.
I had a bit of trouble setting it up, a couple times I got disc read errors from the CD. So I burned the iso at 4x (I'd already md5sum'd it) and then got a decent drive in the box.
Auto Install went perfect. So now all I have to do is attempt to connect this thing to tv (in and out) and I'll be good to go.
UPDATE -
Forgot the link to KnoppMyth (which is a mix of Knoppix and MythTV).

So I've been thinking about building a PVR. I don't really know much about linux, or mythTV, or Freevo, or these winPVR cards you can buy. What should I look at? Where can I find reviews and comparisons of these things?
Is it better to buy the card or just make a dedicated system? (card for sale):

man, I've been so busy lately, haven't had time to work on this, but I got some stuff so I think I'm gonna try to finish this up this week. I was in Linux-config he!! trying to install Fedora Core 2 with drivers for EPIA's integrated mpeg2 decoder, so I might just try KnoppMyth again, or do a dual boot to try to get this thing up.
I'm so lost. It's all greek to me, sorry! I am checking out that byopvr site, though.
cool. ok let me translate.
Fedora Core = a free Linux distribution based off/supported by RedHat
EPIA = the mini-itx form factor motherboard/cpu combo from VIA
mpeg2 decoder = chip doodad on the EPIA that makes watching videos faster than just using software
KnoppMyth = explained in original post
okay, much better! Thanks!
Care to give us an update?
Well I'm in the middle of moving so I haven't really had anytime to work on it. I hooked it up to the TV and was able to change channels and see the program information as I did (on the bottom of the screen) but the image was no good. static on the top 2/3 inches, and blue/green for the rest of the screen. I intend to troubleshoot this (probably just a messed up setting somewhere) but I just haven't had time. could be a bad card, bad driver, etc.
That's awesome, man, I'm glad you got it going! Someday I'll make a mythTV box, too.
Its a myth holy shnikes
How many times have you seen Jimmy Hoffa on this subject
Personally...I love this myth TV deal, I just haven't had a chance or a spare box to setup soemthing yet. I have the Radeon ALL in Wonder and I have to admit the ability of this thing is astonishing, even though I don't use it as much as I should.
I'm still working towards an all in one box top solution -> pc gamer, emulator, tivo, music server, burner, not just to cut cost
(peicing a system like this together is still a bit costly compared to all in one solutions) but because of the Versatility of the system and i like computers. Besides PC games at full detail and resolution is just unbelievable compared to console games when hooked up to a HD set.
I'm gonna use my myth box as a tivo and mp3/media player/server. put a nice big hard drive up on it. I'll run a samba server on it so I can stream to my other windows computers.
it'll also host all my mame/nes/snes roms which work with myth ot-of-the-box, and I hope to get a n64 emulator running.
let me know how it works out
I remember reading that there were problems with using the Radeon All-In-Wonder with MythTV
since we've started this topic...is there a way to watch TV through my laptop, in my room??
ok, holy cow, is this in english...the nerd speak is strong with this one
haha. I was waiting for this.
sweet!
what's your PC setup?
its a VIA mini-itx form-factor m10000 (how you like that one dan?)
I put in a cheap tuner/video capture card I found at a computer show for $20. and it just happened to be supported by myth since it uses a standard chipset. that was a gamble though.
I got a nice little case for it, so it should look nice next to the tv.
what cpu speed? hard drive? ram?
how much did it all cost?
tv tuner card come with a remote control? will it work with mythtv?
the Via epia m10000 is a motherboard that includes a processor.
its a C3@1Ghz, but its also not that expensive. I think I paid $130 for it.
the tv tuner came with a remote, whether it works with myth or not I'm not sure yet, but I can always build a serial ir reciever.
What is it?
it's like tivo: www.mythtv.org
