Heat, Laptop and Wifi
Here's the question for the geeks among us...
My laptop (Compaq 1.8 Celeron...stop laughing Zabel) is set up with my Linksys Wifi card. It works well and all, but the card/laptop generates a LOT of heat. (Well, it seems to me like too much b/c the fan is always spinning). Anyway, my sister got a USB Wifi key for her desktop, and I was thinking, maybe that would help my heat problem...the main goal is to not hear that stupid fan all the time...

yeah man... like everyone is saying... laptops run very hot, ive never had the problem with my wifi card tho... your sure your not just imagining it?
laptops are bult to withstand the heat better than a pc would, plus if it was running TOO hot, either a sensor would complain or the laptop would shut off because of tempature
use motherboard monitor to monitor your sensors they should be within a certain range
are they equivalent? i understand gsm/gprs and how they work together in simple terms bc of working with our fleet tracking
well, they are equivelent in every way except for bandwidth throughput (speed), connection time, and building penetration...

ok - you know how a cordless phone works? plug it into the jack, take the actual handset and go anywhere within the house
wifi works the same. buy a box, plug into your cable modem or high speed internet - and buy a "handset" for the laptop (it's really a card) and walk all over your house. Or office. Or airport.
The cool part is the card works at your house, or your starbucks, or panera, or wherever - it's all the same card. Sometimes you have to pay. Sometimes it's free. Sometimes it's written in chalk on the sidewalk of Manhattan, for all to know about. It's good if it's free.
have you ever seen any warchalking in the city? i always forget to look for it. maybe i'd look harder if i had my laptop with me haha

well, actually, no. the sierra card you are referring to is actually designed on a similar sort of principle, but instead of working just in your house - it works anywhere your cell phone does - it has a much wider area (3-5 miles per cell phone tower). however, speed gets sacrificed - it's usually about the speed of dialup.
so wifi and cellular are different...and then there's the differences betwee GPRS and CDMA 1RxT but I think that's a convo for another day

cdma is the technology that verizon and sprint use. GSM/GPRS is what t-mobile, at&t, and cingular use. ehhh.
WiFi is an abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity, which doesn't tell you much. It's just an easy way of saying "wireless networking".
Typically, computers are networked together using wires. If you look on the back of your PC at work, you'll see one wire running out the back of it into a plug on the wall. Looks like a phone wire, only slightly larger.
So, WiFi removes the wires. There's a few different types of WiFi: 802.11b, 802.11g and others. It basically just boils down to a network tho, allowing computers to talk to each other or the internet.
Wifi cards run warm, for sure. And laptops run warm because of the batteries and all the stuff in that little tiny space.
