FireFox
I started using the FireFox browser, and I'm starting to really like it. one of my favorite things is tabbed browsing. No more opening 30 Internet Explorer windows (I have a bad habit/need to surf several web pages at once.) With tabbed browsing, you use one window, and click on the tabs to switch to the different web pages you have loaded up. I also like the configurability, much better than the mess of wizards of IE. It's got automatic pop-up control, and a little Google textbox, so you don't need the Google Toolbar (but you can get it if you want).
Only problem is that some web-sites don't appear correctly, or their javascript doesn't work right. I'm guessing its because they're using IE-specific stuff.

tabbed browsing is great. I liked it with mozilla, but firefox is much better
IE 7 will have tabbed browsing
I was thinking, a great extension would be like an image ripper or a image publisher so you could take pictures off other websites and upload them to an ftp account somewhere (get rid of that reffering link problem):
right click, image rip, auto copy the address into your clipboard (have an extra menu button for getting last image, directory browse, etc)
tempted to work on it :\
with ie if i want to post a <15 char comment, i pressed ctrl+enter
but that doesnt seem to work for firefox. what to do...what to do?
oh really?? hrm. i may take a look at that.
yeah... you cant use that, you just do < span234234234 > to bypass that.
The find is a tad bit quirky.
sometimes doesn't work in input boxes at all ...also when words are highlighted they create confusion for arrow keys in edit boxes
im falling in love with firefox! thanks for recommending it. im a new user, but i love the tabs feature so far.
tabs is hotness. I have a set of tabs (work email, yahoo email, gmail, slashdot, del.icio.us, ezabel) as my "home page".
Only problem is opening a new window will open all those tabs again in the new window, so I added a link on the desktop with a target of:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" www.yahoo.com
which will open a new firefox window with only www.yahoo.com loaded (no tabs).
how do you set firefox to open up multiple windows on startup?
open all the windows you want to open on startup, then goto tool->options general tab to set your startup page....s page...s see it, it says page esss. pages
also did you guys realize you can open a whole bookmark folder in seperate tabs? right click on that folder->open in tabs
i didnt know that. thats cool.
do as yay said or do it manually.
for home page enter:
http://www.ezabel.com | http://www.slashdot.org | www.yahoo.com
(for non-geeks, | is "shift + \")
thanks for the translation from geek speak to non-geek.
Pros 1.0:
new find: awesome
better status bar items
better extensions and themes manager
live bookmarks
whats your favorite theme? Any suggestions on extensions i should get?
nice thing about PR 1.0 is that a lot of the extensions are part of the actual build.
definites for me everytime are:
Mouse Gestures by Optimoz Team
gmail notifier 0.4
sage: RSS reader
cute menus: adds pictures to your shortcut menus, looks cool
adblock: block adverts, block frames, block shockwave ads (right click = done). Want to block every image from ads.yahoo.com? just block ads.yahoo.com/*
Weather extension is also available but not public yet.
Themes? The default I thought was awesome so i used it for a long time. I just goto the themes web page and sort by most popular or by most downloads and DL away. I used Qute for a long time too... You might not see all the themes yet, since 1.0 is so new a lot of things haven't gotten updated.
The new live bookmarks:
They're great, but it needs one more thing. An option to render the feed as a local page with short descriptions, like sage or any other news reader does.
hmm, well since ive been swayed by this journal.. im gonna try using this today... ill dl it and tell you guys how it goes...
well, i dled this... i like it... any one know of any good themes?
I like the pinball theme. It's not too flashy for use at work, but it's still cool. http://david.jamesnet.ca/firefox/pinball.html
ALERT! I can't use my Firefox all of the sudden. It won't let me find any pages! Only IE works! I downloaded the newest version of Firefox, but to no avail! Please help! What went wrong?
alright, I upgraded, that made no difference, so then I removed all versions of firefox, and deleted the firefox folder. Then I reinstalled firefox 9-3. It's STILL not working. What's going on?
Abort mission Abort mission.... hahaha
Hmm, you rebooted i assume. Sometimes I've noticed firefox not starting and there were a whole bunch of dead processes running in task manager, rare, but it has happened.
Did you delete profiles? Backup your c:/documents and settings/user name/Application Data/Mozilla folder than delete it, see if that works.
You may also have an event notification in event viewer telling you why it hangs.
My horse's name is Fire Fox (but it's actually spelled "Fyre Foxx."
Not that anyone cares......:)
has anyone tried out the "foxamp" extension? It's pretty cool. It loads the necessary control buttons to the bottom left of your Firefox window, so you never need to switch over to winamp to change/stop/pause/etc. a song.
hey that's pretty sweet!
i might prefer the tray control plugins for winamp tho. they put the controls in your system tray.
CORRECTION! I don't know my left from my right, apparently. It loads the controls on the right hand side (if you have your window maximized, it's almost in the same spot as the systray.
I think I read somewhere that the next version of Firefox won't have as many IE-incompatabilities. Mozilla has fewer, but it doesn't have all the functions of Firefox.
I use IE for one website for work that doesn't display a tree control correctly, besides that I haven't had a problem with spyware since. You can get a tool bar button that will load a page into IE.
I think the firefox browser is the same as the mozilla browser, its just the interface that is different, they use the same codebase.
Ok, that's true. I should say that Firefox has the controls displayed a little differently. I love the way it has a google toolbar built in. You're right, though, they are essentially the same. Man, I tried to sound like a techy-girl!
hahaha still on the right track
check out this googlebar plugin for firefox. it's much better.
http://googlebar.mozdev.org/
give you the search term highlighting/searchin in-page, and other useful buttons.
The extensions are incredible for this program.
Sage RSS aggregater is awesome. Loads up on the side docked toolbar, lists your RSS pages, click on a page, streams all your updates right to you.
Adblock. You can block ad frames and images with this trash.
MozGest by Optimoz awesome mouse gestures I use them all the time barely needing to use shortcut keys or command buttons.
And the quick search bookmarks. Want a definition for a word? type dict [word] in the address bar. Search google? Type google [searchphrase] in the address bar.
have you seen the Gmail one?
and, dunno if you read somethingawful forums at all, but there's an awesome extension for it that does some reaalllly cool stuff
yeah yeah, i just havent installed it yet! gmail supposedly has a whole API for integrating with the mailing system? pretty sweet
ok just installed gmail notifier, pretty awesome, i had a windows sys tray auto notifier but it was pointless, this is way better
theres another extension that will process all mailto tags and use gmail to compose.
Man IE needed this stuff a long time ago - for free
stupid question: what's the notifier do?
whoops, that's the window Tray one, not the firefox extension.
he's talking about this one i think
http://nexgenmedia.net/extensions/
oh of course i didn't think in those terms but i figured as much. cool. too bad i dont understand how to set such things up.
just use this one: http://torrez.us/archives/2004/05/23/000272.html
click on the download link, and install it. then put in your username and stuff
done! good times
yeah thats the one
all extensions can ben downloaded by going to tools->extensions->get more extensions
but had to go there because the new release fixes a login problem, new fix wasn't uploaded to mozilla's site yet
I love the Web Developer extension. I use it all the time in development.
Live HTTP Headers is sweet.
Venkman, the javascript debugger is HOT.
yeah, I used to use mozilla just for Venkman. its one of the reasons I downloaded FireFox. I haven't done any hardcore javascript at this job yet, but it sure comes in handy if you do some.
Yeah that developer extension is very helpful. Page resizing to test for resolutions without actually changing the res saves a headache.
Highly suggesting mouse gestures, nice feature. The extensions are just too many to list. Still need better bookmark management in my opinion, but the fact that it intigrates IE bookmark right into it is a beautiful thing.
With the newest version, I'm quite suprised at how well it has improved and notice that there are not many broken sites anymore, theres only a few. (If you click on something and nothing happens, its pop up blocker in action, just add the site your own to the pop up allowable list, a lot of times ive mistaken this for an error on the page)
Yeesh even macromedia makes downloads specifically for mozilla/firebird
yeah, I've heard of mouse gestures, but haven't tried it yet. and automagically importing my IE favoritos was cool.
