i don't know if any of you can help me but hopefully you can. i recently put a new hard drive onto my computer. the hard drive was completely blank so i had to format it and everything. first, i installed windows 98. in my opinion win98 is the best OS... at least for the things i use my computer for. is there a way to upgrade to win98 second edition without uninstalling the windows i have on now? another problem i am having is that all of my drivers never installed. for example the driving for my monitar was never installed. all i can use is 16 colors and i can't change the resolution. all that is on now is the basic driver you get with windows. is there a place where i can download drivers off of the internet for free? i need a driver for my audio system too.

any help will be appriciated.

as for buying a new computer i wish i could. however i don't have a job. i would like to upgrade to xp as well but i don't have a cd to do it.

i don't have any of the cd's to install any of the drivers either. i just got the computer from my parents and i know nothing about it. the monitar is a CTX VL700. thats all i know. the speakers are harmon/kardon if that helps. where can i find the video and sound cards? pc system and then where?

thanks again

google is your friend here. Look for manufacturing information on each PCI/ISA card (version numbers, serial numbers).

Also do a search on the manufacturer of the system or motherboard.

example:
google.com->drivers [insert serialnumber/manufacturer here] download

if you don't know any of this info, you'll have to take apart the computer case and inspect each card and component to find out make/model info

Right, I was hoping i implied this by 'looking on each pci/isa card.'

Even if you don't know the manufacturer of the card sometimes just typing in the serial number located on it will return the needed results.

you should have the original disks that came with each component, no? the drivers should be on those.

you can get all the drivers you need for free on the web. please post the make and model of each component, including the monitor, video card, sound card, printer, motherboard (or PC system if you don't know specifics), etc.

a lot of companies have dropped support for windows 98 now, tho, so you may have a hard time finding stuff if you don't have the original disks.

as far as upgrading to 98 SE, 98 is very picky when it comes to upgrades. if you have a 98 SE disk, you can boot from it and then install it into your existing windows directory, c:\windows. It should handle upgrading everything.

A word of advice: If your computer is anything faster than 800Mhz with around 256MB of RAM, upgrade to Windows XP. It's worth it. All of the drivers will be included for your PC and things will work A LOT better. Seriously. All of your games will work, and if you can't get something to work, it should work using the free DOSbox software.

If your computer is slower than those mentioned specs, please go to Walmart or wherever and drop $400 for a new PC. You'll thank yourself later.
