LG GSA Dual Layer DVD burner

yay by yayOG 2004 · Aug 20, 2004 · 98 views

Been looking for a new CD burner ever since I gave my old one to my parents. I ended up purchasing a LG Eletronics GSA 4120B Dual Layer DVD burner, can hold up to 8.5 gigs dual layered, or around 4 gigs single layer, and can burn every format known to man, even regular CDs. I tried to find as many reviews as possible, between tomshardware.com and cdrinfo.com the LG had to be it. I bought this drive for under 100 bucks from newegg, even came with some free DVD-Rs.

So far so good, although I haven't really tried burning anything. Setup was simple, comes with Nero software which finally integrates decently with your OS. Simple install. Gets the job done. I can't stand software that takes over your computer, so I liked this.

The nice thing is, that even thought dual layer technology is in BETA somewhat, and quirky depending on the medium you use, most of its fault with be in the firmware/software for the drive, so you can update your drive when fixes come out.

So far I'm very impressed. I've seen too many problems with Plextor (one drive completely trashed and mine was quirky) originally recommended by techtv.

Update so far:

This drive is surprisingly fast, I did a 4GB write and verify of data in 6 minutes, just about backed up everything I could find. I wasn't expecting that at all, I feel like it went faster than my original plextor 40X CD writer.

Software is real complete and pretty, interfaces really nicely.

hmmm, you gotta give me some ideas too... i got a dual layer drive combo all in one drive off of NewEgg for 70... the thing rocks... ive been playing around with dvd copying software, but besides that i dunno what to do... lol. its pretty sweet to have all in one drives tho...

that dual layer stuff is hot. it's tough to find media tho, like in order to get 1 disk, you have to buy a pack of 10 other normal dvd-rs, which is kinda wack.

i'm definitely tempted tho, with those sub $100 prices.

You need dual layer medium, IIRC, DVD+R can only be in dual layer on this drive. About 12 bucks a disc, write once, better do it right.

So far from reviews I read, the media you use could cause problems.

The nice thing about this drive (as most drives too) though is I can through anything in there, even a regular 40X CDRW or CDR.

wow. so do you need special media, or does regular DVD-Rs work? I haven't really heard much about this technology

you need to have Dual Layer dvd-rs, which are kinda hard to come by, and expensive right now.
