War of the Worlds
No black smoke. Aliens completely too friendly looking-did they even have tentacles?? They aren't supposed to be able to move around that easily. They didn't build their different machines-for excavating, fighting. Tim Robbins character was two guys moshed into one. The dumb son that wasn't even in the book-how did he survive that massacre on the hill?! I get that the story had to be adapted for the screen, but there were some pretty major discrepencies with this movie. At least Katie Holmes wasn't in it.

Yea that abrupt ending was pretty weird.
I was all expecting something to happen and it ended..
Movie was good up to that part..
Ending was just mindless.
and don't give me that " it's the way the book was " booboopoop
did i read the book? no
do i care about the book? no
I went to see the movie ! omg.
and it's ending was poopie.
Saw this last night. Overall, I liked it, but I didn't understand something. WHEN did the aliens bury these machines? Before humans existed? If so, then how could they have "regarded our planet with envy" like it said in the beginning, if there was no one or nothing to envy? And if it was AFTER humans were here, then HOWHOWHOW did they get the machines here without us seeing that? That's what I didn't understand.
Also, the ending was too abrupt. I understood what happened, but more explanation would have made it pulled together more.
yes! i thought the ending was too abrupt also.
yeah me too, it was like suddenly everything stopped.
yeah how did the son and the entire family that was in boston escape unharmed?:!!?? like the woman is pregnant but no she is too far superior to the machines. her daughter was living in a cellar but she just sat at home and all was fine. cuz boston isnt a major city they'd try and take out.
i know! the house was all fine and everything too.
The ending in the book is rather abrupt that way, maybe even more so.
I thought the movie was awesome but again- lack of black smoke? I don't understand why they wouldn't put that in. I think that's even more terrifying then the heat ray.
There were some discrepencies but I think a lot of them can be attributed to the fact that they did the movie in 2000 not 1900 when it's supposed to take place.
Also, the fact that the machines were already here? That's one of those things that makes me angry because I don't understand the point of changing something like that. I mean- maybe to get the aliens up and moving instantly?
THe fact that the aliens went down in the basement was also annoying. Another one of those- why have that things. The aliens had trouble moving because of the gravity..they -needed- the tripods!!
Though, as much as I'm having stuff to complain about I really did like the movie.
I didn't see this movie yet.. but i know i'm going to walk away saying..
Oh that was a cool summer movie.
Mindless and fun and ENTERTAINING
Loved the movie. I think spielberg did a great job on this one. Really captured the feeling of the disaster.
So many classic shots, and angles.
Also, I loved how many really really long scenes there were that had no cuts at all.
I noticed this too, most action movies now adays have MANY many cuts, from different angles. But War of the Worlds had LONG scenes from swaying camera angles... specially in the basement with the aliens walking around
Yeah! great example
another was when they first get in the van. for such a long time there are no cuts.. as they get onto the highway, and the girl is screaming and stuff, it's like panning around and zooming in and out of the car
yeah true! another amazing scene...
yes #1 fav thing was the swaying camera angles, especially the ones shooting in the town in the beginning, shooting towards the sky, it felt like you were running backwards
i went in expecting nothing, came out wanting to see it again and more
i guess it depends where your mind is, i didnt go in ready to disect, i went in ready to enjoy. and i haven't read the book
yes there are some plot holes. it happens, i dont feel like watching a 18 hour movie anyway to explain why the girl's hair is blonde. LOTR has small if no plot holes.. you know why? its half a year long
and yes thank you for no katie holmes
hahahaha what'samatter no one likes katie? lol
you mean katie dump-face? yeah that's right
HAH! As Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine all sign on to a Batman Begins sequel, Katie Holmes's name is noticeably missing.
yeah this is good news
thank GAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDD
lol dump face? you couldnt do any better than that? hahaha... i, for one, am disapointed.
I forgot to mention that I enjoyed it. I actually didn't cover my eyes and watched the whole thing. I am scared of everything, but really the only thing that made me jump was when they were in the basement at his ex-wife's house. When the lights are crazy outside and Tom Cruise jumps up and then it goes dark and in the next flash his son was up...that freaked me out for some reason. Oh and the bodies in the river...GROSS.
was this movie meant to be a scary one? i dont know see i didnt read or see any trailers except tv previews
so like, i wasnt really scared, as much very intrigued to see what happens, suspense
I was scared. The camera angles really put me IN the action I guess? And also it was SO FREEZING cold in the theater and so i was shaking because of that, not because of being scared lol
meant to be suspenseful i guess. suspense and scared are the same feeling to me = absolute terror. im a wus.
I thought overall, the movie was good, and I was pretty much frightened the entire time because I kept thinking about like what's gonna happen when the whole world really IS in a panick in the future, for different reasons but you know what i mean. It just gave such a feeling of dread and panic and I liked that.
However again the ending was dumb.
ditto. i felt scared the whole time. i was like why did i go to a movie i was going to stress out in. but i didn't think it would be as intense for me as it was. i have a lot of nightmares about being chased by things so that's why i think i was freaked out so much.
everyone said the ending was dumb and abrupt, but that is basically the was it was in the old movie, too.
yeah, I was thinking this too, I kept remembering that scripture about them trying to hide under rocks and in caves.
at the part when everyone is taking the car and then everyone is going to get on the boat i was calmly watching but then it really hit me about what they were showing mob mentality. and that one day all those hordes of people would be trying to get at me to torture with all their rage gave me one of the most deep set fear and cold sweat in the theater i have ever had. that is why this movie was so frightening.
I thought the movie rocked, different from book, but what movie taken from a book ISNT changed?
If you guys had a chance to listen to the radio broadcast that milkboy posted a few days back.. its VERY interesting, and not TOO far off from the movies main theme.
i thought the movie was just okay. i got a little spooked a few times. but overall...not that great. austin thought it was better than i did...maybe it's more of a guy thing? he read the book, i didnt...maybe that's why. i dunno.
I didn't finish reading the story, I started to but then I stopped but the parts that I read were completely different from the movie.
I liked that I had no idea what was going to happen at the end though.
However, the ending was stinkin ridiculously saccharine
