SCHOOL OF ROCK

i saw School of Rock on friday and i loved it. it's essential movie watching. the director is Richard Linklater. he did Dazed and Confused and Waking Life. this was clearly a Jack Black vehicle, meaning the movie was written FOR him. but it's not Jack Black overload. it's not Jack Black running around like a jackass, overacting, doing all of his "power-moves" and stupid, slapstick, gross out stuff you normally see him doing. the movies IS deeply funny, but it's also warm and sweet and for a change the main tool used was character devolopment! a key factor in movies i feel is neglected. this is where the kids come in. okay, the kids showcased in this flick are AMAZING. they are extremely young and most of them are REALLY playing all the instruments you see them playing! they rock extremely hard and they're cute and fun to watch progress and grow. there are a couple familiar faces. one i recognized is the bassist in the band. she played young Margot Tenenbaum in the Royal Tenenbaums. she got too little screen time and too few lines in this movie. but HEY you can't have everything. anyway, Jack Black's interaction with these kids was priceless. completely hilarious and sweet. this movie is, in some ways, totally UNbelievable! getting away with what Jack Black's character got away with is impossible and you'll note that early on. but you'll be having so much fun you won't care. additionally, the camera work is a lesson in how to get everything you need and not be distracting or pretentious--establishing shots are good and aren't undermined in the editting process, tracking shots are satisfyingly long and well executed, the steady cams are fluid and not overused, hand held shots personalize and make the characters more endearing, shots with multiple people conversing or acting aren't hard to follow! s'great. just great. everyone go see this already.

It's odd..I hate Jack Black a lot, so when I saw the movie I really didn't like it. BUT I enjoy Saving Silverman.

this movie is the best movie for people who really want to know the roots from what they are listening to now.
Yes, Rush, Floyd, Zep. They were the forunners for many bands. Love em or hate em, its history.
Watch the movie!!!!

i was so upset we didn't get to go see this movie when we were supposed to. people in knew said they thought it stunk but then again, they really don't like jack black. cuz my parents think he's okay and when they saw it they were like "it wasn't as funny as everyone made it seem"

are you a jack black fan?

fivezero #6.1 fivezeroOG 2003

jack black is okay. i'm not a huge fan. sometimes he gets to obnoxious and rediculous. but, like i said, this movie isn't him overacting it's him connecting with some really awesome kids. he made it really good tho. it's really what you'd call an ensemble cast, even if it was written FOR jack black.

I didn't get to see it yet, but I will be seeing it, 'cause Jack cracks me up. He's awesome. But, yeh, the movie was written specifically for him... you're right. He even said so, last week in an interview. He used to be neighbors with Mike White. They had lived next to each other for 3 years, and Mike had been wanting to write something for Jack to do.

I would like to see this movie again. I was thoroughly entertained, and I have movie ADD (and the theater was freezing). I have only one stipulation for the next time, no whispers in my ear "the bass player is hot" or key/phone losing.

The diary of Jack Black was on MTV, and they showed a jam session with him and the kids...very cool. Jack Black is on crack tho. BIG TIME.

Did you see the part on the DIary when he went to McDonalds? It was soo hilarious. He go a Big Mac, Fish Sandwich, and Chicken sandiwich, and he put them all together to make what he called a,"Land, air and sea sandwich."

he said some thing too, that the sandwich was like a cow that ate a fish and then was running through a potato field when he ate it, cause of the french fries. He went on for sooo long

I did not appreciate this movie really at all. The little bass player was the cutest girl ever. I do hate Jack Black though, so this may be why I hated it.
