Sounds like this has nothing to do with two monitors as it does with two users on two workstations.

That being the case you'll need a client-server technology of SOME sort so you can sync the excel document from two remote locations. Without looking too much into it I instantly start thinking about:
1. There's probably a third party addon for Excel somewhere. Look for Excel sychroniziation. I came across this (http://www.synkronizer.com/)
2. Don't feel like paying? Then build a VBA synchronization routine. Have it write to a common database or XML file that can be polled/refreshed.
3. Sharepoint I think does this kind of stuff, but I think that's a little out of the scope.

The problem is I don't think Excel natively supports keeping a remote excel spreadsheet in sync on two different workstations, but I could be mistaken considering I don't have access to anything past 2000 right now. Just my brain dump as far as that goes. HTH

Why not just a shared workbook?

i was talking to ian.
i dont yell at anyone else but ian.

well we have a 50ft. vga cable snaked through the ceiling. and it's up and running now.. just trying to be more convenient is all.

thing is.. the girl has to work on this pc all day doing lots of other stuff... then once in awhile she brings up the spreadsheet.. plops in a number... and minimizes.. and moves on..

what was that cartoon with the kid and the glove.. he would hit the glove and dreams would come true for a day? man i loved that show

ok guy .. stop with the name calling. hurts my feelings.

i have one of our production ladies updating an excel spreadsheet on her desktop...
then on a monitor far far away.. a chart updates with that data.

just trying to find an easier to do that.. rather than window dragging, min, maxing, constant broken links. etc.

jerkface

Would be nice to know who you are yelling at. I assume me, but someone doesn't know how to click on the 'reply' link.

why not use some kind of remote desktop solution, since far far away is too far for a VGA cable ...

what are you talking about. what a weirdo

what are these files? like powerpoint slideshows?

if you have two monitors plugged into a video card with two outputs, or two monitors plugged into two video cards, then each monitor is independent, and you can move windows between them. they are not just mirrors of each other. windows fully supports this and you don't need any other software.

matt's right, a splitter is the wrong connection configuration. you need either a dual-head video card, or two video cards. when it comes to a laptop, the best setup you can normally do is use the LCD screen on the laptop as one monitor, and then plug a monitor into the dvi/vga out and configure it as a separate monitor. not sure if docking stations actually add a second head.

Do any of the guys on here have a job title other than Programmer or IT Tech? Bunch of dorks... LOL! I don't know what the heck you guys are talking about. I should start a thread about features of Solid Works or AutoCAD to confuse you guys... Hehe...

" Set App = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
App.Run "C:\Winfolder\Explorer.exe
/n,/e,drive\folder", 1, False
App.Run "C:\Winfolder\Explorer.exe
/n,/e,drive\folder", 1, False
" for openinngggsss

thanks for the pro tip. Just using a decent video card with a dvi to dual vga splitter . for laptop I use a docking station that splits out to 2 as well.

thefunkyfresh #2.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

i think using a splitter won't allow you to use the monitors independently though, they will show identical stuff

superhero #2.1.1 superheroOG 2004

but with a docking station he should be good

you have the dell D540?

superhero #1 superheroOG 2004

yeah, i use DisplayFusion for multi-monitor situations (i think). I've heard Ultramon is good too.

I'd check out Display Fusion first, I'm pretty sure it's free.

How are you connecting both monitors to your PC? With a laptop, multiple monitors is darn near impossible for less than $500 (AFAIK) - open to suggestions on that.

theremin #1.1 thereminOG 2002

yeh, i wanna do the multimonitor thing with a laptop as well. I'm used to using 3 monitors now, from my job. Then, when I get home to my desktop, I'm like... oh... how awful... only a single, lonely monitor.
