Who is your favorite athlete of all time?

jp by jpOG 2003 · Jul 22, 2005 · 156 views

Mine is without a doubt Wayne Gretzky. Anyone who talks to me online knows my screenname of many years pays tribute to The Great One, and much of my pre-teenage savings was spent on Gretzky artifacts, including his rookie card, autographs, and jerseys. Despite not making that much money as a youth, pretty much any time my grandparents took me out to get some stuff (I guess they felt bad since I was the only one of their grandchildren who didn't get Christmas presents) I usually looked for the coolest Wayne Gretzky artifact I could find. He's always been the greatest and most dominant athlete in sports history to me (more so than Michael Jordan, is one of my most firm non-religious beliefs) and in addition, never showed anything but class and dignity on and off the ice. When he came to the Rangers, my favorite team, it only thrilled me more, and I was able to see my hero play and score a goal in person. My passion for collecting Gretzky stuff may not be what it once was, but I did purchase and enjoy the Ultimate Gretzky DVD set, bringing back all the memories.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to argue the Jordan/Gretzky thing with me...bring it on.

Who is your favorite?

lawrence taylor is one of my favorite athletes of all time...

against the New Orleans Saints Taylor played through a torn pectoral muscle to record seven tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. Taylor's shoulder was so severely injured that he had to wear a harness to keep it in its place. The Giants held on for a 13–12 win, and Parcells later called Taylor's performance "the greatest game I ever saw."

In 1989, Taylor recorded 15 sacks. He was forced to play the latter portion of the season with a fractured tibia.

has been ranked as the greatest defensive player in history by media members, former players, and coaches. He is also widely considered to be one of the most feared players to ever step onto the football field.

...my god...what a beast.

some of my other fav. athletes are...
patrick ewing
john starks
charles barkley
tiki barber
michael strahan
mark bavaro
ronnie lott
jake lamotta
and many more.

That's cuz LT was so high on coke he couldn't feel a thing...

A
#12.2.1 alexOG 2001

yeah, because coke enables you to not feel pain.

B
#12.2.1.1 brothermanOG 2004

Maybe.

A
alexOG 2001

you're a retard.

B
brothermanOG 2004

Hey, David Wells pitched a perfect game while drunk. Why couldn't LT do something tremendous on coke?

A
alexOG 2001

because baseball is so undemanding of physical ability, that you can play while inebriated.

B
brothermanOG 2004

Are you serious? do you even know what a perfect game is?

A
alexOG 2001

yeah, and it certainly isn't baseball.

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

A perfect game is when no one on the opposing team reaches base. No walks, no hits, no errors. It is the most difficult feat in all of sports!

A
alexOG 2001 brotherman

i know what the term "perfect game" means. and it must be one of the most boring things you could possibly watch. no hits, no walks, no runs...NOTHING! nothing happens in an already extremely boring sport over the course of a perfect game. in a sport, where seeing people actually MOVE is extremely rare. how could you possibly sit through that? how is that perfect?

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

The point is...No other feat in sports compares to it.

A
alexOG 2001 brotherman

i disagree

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

Ok, name something that does.

A
alexOG 2001 brotherman

hmmm, something that compares with a perfect game? how about a one punch knockout? or a 100 yard rushing touchdown? or a buzzer beating full court shot? or eating 50 1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes?

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

Dude, not even close! You are talking about things that are instantaneous while a perfect game requires total focus and skill over 9 innings.

A
alexOG 2001 brotherman

how could you say that it's "not even close?" how about rushing for 2000 yards in one season? that is not instantaneous, and less people have done that than pitched perfect games.

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

That's a compilation of stats over a whole season. How many players are never tackled in a single game amassing yardage? That's what someone would have to do to be in the same light. Perfect games don't happen as often as you think. I think half a dozen guys have done it in the last 15 years.

A
alexOG 2001 brotherman

whatever, this is the dumbest argument ever. a perfect game is nothing short of miraculous, but it still does not change the fact that baseball is stupid.

according to you hitting a baseball is like the hardest thing to do in the history of the universe, so pitching a perfect game should not really be all that hard.

B
brothermanOG 2004 alex

Maybe you should show me a miraculous one punch shot with those pythons of yours. LOL! Ah, we all have different tastes. I like baseball, you like parchesi...I mean football. Hitting against a pitcher who is throwing stuff capable of a perfect game is the hardest thing you can do.

fivezero #5.1 fivezeroOG 2003

he said he's the only man he'd consider having a gay experience with.

juicymango #4 juicymangoOG 2003

I think Lance Armstrong is the greatest athlete of all time. I can't imagine anyone else doing a three-week race, 7 years in a row, after having cancer, and winning all 7

I'm kind of amazed by him

thefunkyfresh #4.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

awesome athlete, what he overcame and and everything, its impressive. However, the tour de france is the only race he does, while most of the other racers race in other races during the year to make money.

juicymango #4.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

it is true that he only realy "works" about 3 weeks out of a year but, i mean he has to train practically all year to be in shape to do that... I dont know, to me an athlete isn't necessarily someone who plays in a certain sport and gets paid, even someone who has a regular full time office job but runs 10 miles every single day, to me that's an athlete, more so than the pro's .. sometimes.

I don't know, I dont' really like sports

thefunkyfresh #4.1.1.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

no, all i'm saying is that alot of the other racers in the tour de france are really worn down because they have to do other races during the year to make their money. lance is smart because he figured that the only race that gets tons of the publicity is the tour and he makes most of his money on endorsements.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

ah i gets it
