Hackers

thatdarngirl by thatdarngirl · Aug 18, 2003 · 258 views · Journal

So, I finally saw Hackers last night. Quite amazing actually. I have now decided to revert back to the early 90's and dress like Angelina (Kate) in the movie. Anyone who still has clothing from the early 90's feel free to donate because the only clothes I have are from when I was like 8 so they're mostly ocean pacific matching spandex shorts and t-shirts. Also, Serial's real name in the movie is Immanual Goldstein, the name of the man from 1984. Interesting.

Actually "Cereal Killer"'s real name in the movie was "Emmanuel Goldstein". Emmanuel Goldstein is the Editor-in-Chief of 2600 Magazine, The Hacker Quarterly. I'm 100% sure that the movie named this character after him.

But now I wonder if the name of the editor of 2600 is his real name, or if he changed it to (a variation of) this 1984 character's name. It would def. fit if he did, because they are always lamenting the reach of Big Brother in this magazine.

I agree that the Hackers character was named after Goldstein from 2600.

And on Goldstein's real name:

19. Your real name is Eric Corley. Why do you use the name Emmanuel Goldstein?
I believe everyone should be given the opportunity to name themselves. That name should reflect something about who you are and what you believe in and stand for. Emmanuel Goldstein is that for me, and for those who want to learn why, get a copy of George Orwell's "1984" and see for yourself. Interestingly, our first issue of 2600 was published in January 1984. A complete coincidence.

good research, confirmed my suspicions.

BTW, I took a computer ethics class in college, and Emmanuel Goldstein came and talked to us (one of the kids in the class must have gone to a few of the 2600 meetings) and showed one of the movies they've produced, I think it was about Kevin Mitnick. pretty cool to meet him in person.

anyone ever run around neked after a cool night of partying.. and then all of a sudden feel water drops all over you and you think it's raining. but really you're just in a catholic church and people are just spritzing you with holy water. Jewit.

that just happened to me LAST night!!!!

web-toedchloe #6 web-toedchloeOG 2001

I watched that last night too! It wasn't the first time, though, it was like the 100th. Matthew Lillard's whole premise is that we are in 1984. I don't think Emmanuel Goldstein was his real name in the movie, I think both Goldstein and Serial Killer were fake names.

"Spandex. It's a privledge, not a right."

there's a part of universal studios (i think its islands of adventure) that is all jurassic park. and they have lollipops that look like amber colored and then real bugs stuck in the middle of them for when you are done licking it down, you have a tasty treat.
