What to do with secular life?
by So, I am at the time in my life I'm supposed to decide what to do with the rest of it. Lovely. I have always wanted to be a teacher, mainly literature, but after days of reading The Bell Jar twice I feel discontent with that. Perhaps I'll study something obscure instead. I could sit around, read all the novels I want while making money studying things like Blood Splots, how sleeping with your parents as children makes you smarter, or becoming a Tolkien expert. I get to start County College next Tuesday..oh joy.

after school i had spiritual plans alredy made but I had neglected to make plans for my secular life. I still havent actually. I just do temp work. yes, it was funny! his comment was labeled stupid, because while it was on-topic, it was not serious. if somebody only wanted to see like "real" comments on eZabel, they could filter out Stupid and they wouldn't see this.
thanks for the support. i'm still trying to figure ian out. if i post something funny, he labels it stupid. if someone else posted the same thing, it would have been 'funny.' he also puts me through the ringer on my news stories, yet all kinds of goofy stuff ends up on the front page. apparently slippin a benjamin hasn't helped either. (such is the life of a peon)

If you wanna pioneer, the key is to find something that needs little or no schooling(well, these days, you have to go to school to make any kind of decent money) It has to be something specialized tho. Something very specific that has good hourly pay so you can work part-time. I'm now going to school to become a sign language interpreter after wanting to do this for 5 years now. Pick something that you know you've always been interested in...there's always that chance you won't like it but this way, it's not a complete shot in the dark. Yay! I start school in 5 days! Bleck! Gotta do whatcha gotta do
Good advice. Some freinds do that (interpreting) in our area, and its a pioneer's dream job!
i always wanted to learn sign language!! it's such a great language!!! my grandma's hall shares with the deaf cong. and they have the tv's and video camereas so they could zoom in and people could answer during the watchtower. so jealous. i always watned to do that
Its so intresting that you should say this! When I first read this journal I was going to reccommend this exact field. All through High School this is what I was planning on taking up. I even had an internship at the Virginia School for the deaf and blind. I learned a lot! Interpreters can easily make 20.00 an hour starting off. Its not uncommon for interpreters to make $50.00 dollars an hour. And I heard that Bethel may accept sisters who can sign. Overall a good choice!
how much do regular interpreters make? like if you spoke spanish and french? as much as sign language?
I can't say it would be definitively as it varys from state to state, but it seems like it would be, more and more people are immigrating to the U.S. from South America, Mexico and Hati.Ad they need to see doctors and get legal help, doctors and lawyers commonly hire interprters and pay them well. Since its not a little known fact the Americans tend not to be multi-lengual. This article is discussing the growth in Cali but if this is a reflection of what it will soon be like in other parts of the country interpreting in any language seems to be pretty lucrative.
that's so awesome!!! its one of my goals to learn as many languages as possible. so maybe this is it. those yearly rates are really good for just starting out. i know my dad's company hires translaters but i think they have swedish and german. i hope to one day be trilingual. but i really wish i had to time to dedicate learning sign language. i learn he others in school.
Yep! I would go for it if I were you. I love language as well. I took five years of spanish in High School, I've been learning ASL off and on for about six years (slacked off need to get back on the ball). And I even started learning Hebrew last year. I want to learn as many languages as possible. My sisters and I have started attending the Spanish group on Sundays and I hope to switch very soon.
same here. i probably will pioneer for a jear before deciding though. i just like to say i have absoluely no direction in my life and if anyone would like to point me a way i'd happily consider it.
