QUICK!
I have a bunch of people at work asking me questions... this girl has some questions about why we don't believe in hell. I wish I had my reasoning book here... I'm gonna get one at the meeting tonight for just work. anyway, she uses the New International Version (NIV). does anybody know what I can show her from there? What's that scripture in Isaiah... the dead are conscious of nothing at all?
maybe I'll just get ready and wait till tomorrow.

watchtower.org man... "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten." (Ecclesiastes 9:5)
"As the [beast] dies, so the [man] dies; and they all have but one spirit . . . All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust." (Ecclesiastes 3:19, 20)
death is not permanent: "The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus'] voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."—John 5:28, 29.
nicely handled, freste
hah I think Ian is setting a good example for me on how to use the internet well
watchtower.org rules...so informative..it's like ezabel but without all that TALKING
Also the fact that people believe in hell as a place of torment. And since we teach that God is love, then why would he torment people?
better yet, there's a scripture talking about children being put through the fire, and that it wasn't Jehovah's command...let me look it up.
my Bible's in the car...I can't look it up right now. Maybe later.
you thinking of Deuteronomy 12:31?
"You must not do that way to Jehovah your God, for everything detestable to Jehovah that he does hate they have done to their gods, for even their sons and their daughters they regularly burn in the fire to their gods."
that works, it's something like that. Does that scripture continue on saying something like: "a thing which I had not commanded, no, nor did it come into my heart"
it continues, "Every word that I am commanding YOU is what YOU should be careful to do. YOU must not add to it nor take away from it."
look up some other scriptures with the cross-reference
don't tell him what to do!
shut up, doofus neck
(see...the funny thing about this comment is that I go on to tell YOU what to do..and that is "shut up". Really this comment is made for laughs, and is not designed to hurt or be taken seriously.)
you have an odd sense of humor, dude.
true, true
I don't laugh at any comment that lacks Ian's FUNNY label. Without it, how am I supposed to know if it is really funny?
hm... what about comments made off of eZabel? do u call up Ian and ask if he would mark them funny THEN laugh? hehe that would be silly...
one could carry around brightly colored pieces of posterboard marked "funny" or "off topic"...kind of like the flashing APPLAUSE sign for a studio audience.
it's somethng tlike that, but jehovah says that nothing likethat "passing people through fire) has never even came up in his heart
yeah that's the scripture i was thinking of
I said that at comment #11
Article on Hellfire Teaching: http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/2002/7/15/article_02.htm
we dont believe in hell??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! hahahaha j/k
PAGAN!!!
yeah, I know, completely supprised me too
thanks for all that helped me out with this. she's gonna be a tough nut to crack, very steeped in false teachings.... hellfire, rapture, trinity, etc... I don't think I want to give her any internet links or literature because i'm afraid she'll try to give me stuff to read.
Also... anybody have a good explanation of john chapter 1? In the NIV version it says the word WAS god
Read the whole chapter of first John. John 1:18 makes it pretty clear that he is not equal to Jehovah.
Also, there's a scripture in Acts that talks about Paul being considered a god, because he gets bitten by poisonous snakes but doesn't die (or something like that). If you have a greek version of the greek scriptures(blue Bible), you can show her (or you could just explain to her) that the words used to call paul a god were the same words used to call Jesus a god. In place they use "a", but in the other they do not. (does this make sense?)
also, there is a big difference between a translation of the bible and a version. NIV is a version which means that it has been changed quite a bit. ie. "a god", jehovah's name... as todd said the greek interlinear translation show clearly that it says "a god". sounds kinda tedious, but it's all about context too.
thanks t-baz, for clearing that up a bit.
any way to clear up this scripture?
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
"hell" in that case is referring to Gehenna, the everlasting destruction from Jehovah. It's saying do not fear man, fear God.
thanks ian. I also used some scriptures from here: http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/1997/5/15/article_02.htm
I had to be careful though, because for most of them, they took the word "soul" out in the NIV bible
FEAR NOT THOSE WHO KILL THE BODY BUT CAN NOT DESTROY THE SOUL! FAITHFUL TO THE END CONTINUE... I WILL HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOAL... top 20 yo...
That's so funny! Do you see scriptures and always sing the songs in your head too?
i know you needed a comment yesterday but maybe next time find a neutral bible. maybe your parents or the kh library has another version. then it's not YOUR bible versus HER bible.
