Things to do around NYC
So, I'm planning on taking a trip to the Boston and NYC areas in June, and I'm trying to figure out what to do while I'm there. I already have lots of ideas about what I'm gonna do in Boston since I have friends there and all my relatives that are in the truth live around there, but I need some ideas for things to do in and around NYC. I've already decided that I'm at least going to visit Patterson, since I've never been there before. (Well, not since they finished construction, anyway.) Of course, I'm also definitely gonna go to a Yankees game.
Any ideas for other things I should do while I'm in the area?
I'm probably gonna be renting a car while I'm there so it doesn't even have to be that close to the city. In fact, at this point I have no idea where I'm even gonna be staying. So, anything within a 2 (or so) hour drive of the city would be possible. Anyway, suggestions are welcome and wanted.
So I thought of another question to ask you guys in regard to this: How long does it take, and what is the best way to get into the city? I've been thinking a bit about where I'm going to stay when I'm there and it seems that hotels in the city are a lot more expensive than ones just outside. So, I was thinking of staying outside the city. But, I really don't want to stay so far away that it would take more than an hour to get into the city. How close would I have to stay for that to be possible?

Well you can go check out broadway. They have a cool place called the village where you can check out gay people and trendy stuff.
i LOVE chelsea!
Thinking to myself: (I live an hour out of SF. If I wanted to see gay people I'd just go down to the Castro.)
yeah but new york has awesome people that tlak to you no matter what. they wokr in the stores and help you shop. and the village has the BEST shoes and tons of clothes you will never find anywhere else. trash and vaudville is an awesome store!!
i love times square. the giant toys r'us, BB King's joint, that huge video arcade, that mall/5 stories of resturants (it's not really a mall - it's just like, friday's, applebees, hoolihans on top of each other), jump on the bus from the port authority and you're back in jersey
times square is definitely the most unfulfilling place to go in nyc
this is true for the most part. but it's like when someone has a huge mole on their face, you just gotta stare at it a bit. lots of lights and posters to look at, stores, resturants, so forth. it holds my attention for about an hour and i'm ready to go.
it is. you see it so much on tv and all that standing there just does not make that much of a difference. except that the sidewalks glitter
one time i went there and this kid was like, "why do the sidewalks sparkle?" we told him "oh ya know there's glass in the cement to make it sparkle." he goes, "no it's all over the sidewalks not just in front of this one store."
Maybe it is, but I have to go there just to be able to say I've been there.
you should check out the natural history museum, central park and maybe catch a concert or perhaps a show on or off broadway. theres tons of good resturants around. also, keep us updated on when and where you'll be around. i won't speak for anyone else, but i'd like to meet you! make an ezabel event!
Yeah the natural history museum definitely seems like it would be interesting to see. I don't know much about Central Park. Are there things to do there or is it just this huge natural area in the center of Manhattan? Either way it sounds interesting. The other stuff you mentioned sounds interesting too, though I'm a little wary about Broadway shows.
I'd like to meet you guys too, and I'll try to think of something to make into an event.
Even if there's not really stuff to "do" there, you still have to go. Plus you can go see the big castle. It's just really pretty there.
there's the tavern on the green restaurant. it's all lit up right now and pretty. there's the petting zoo in the park. games to watch. i hear they also might be renewing the shakespeare in the park!!
the thing is, when you live here and go to the city anytime you want, you don't know all the great things to do because it's always at your disposal so you can't really tell someone what tot do when they're on a trip or something. just wander around and see what you can find! there's always something there!
yeah, this is definitely true. whenever my pals and i make plans to go someplace, we almost always end up on the other end of the city. always! just walk down any street--you never know what you'll find.
I know what you mean. I never know what to tell people to do in SF. But I figure you guys would still have a better idea than I would about what to do in NYC seeing as I've only been there once or twice and that was a *long* time ago.
actually, it would help to know what you're into, besides academia. give us an idea. what kinda food do you dig? do you like karoake? do you like to dance? give us an idea.
Frankly, it would help if I knew what I was into. Baseball definitely falls into that category, so I'm definitely going to go to a Yankees game when I'm in NYC and a Red Sox game when I'm in Boston. I like going to movies, and I'm hoping to be able to go to a few when I'm back in Boston. (I might even be able to get in free when I'm there.) Other than that I can't really think of anything that stands out in my mind.
As far as food goes, pizza is number one on my list when I'm back east. I also love Japanese food, especially sushi.
I've never done karaoke, and I've never really danced so I have no idea about either of those.
Okay..I know the BEST sushi place! My sister and I always go there becasue the O-bento boxes are cheap and they give you sooo much wonderful yummy food. It's on St. Marcs Place.
i've never eaten sushi....
hmmmm. yes, new york pizza and bagels are unlinke any other!! it has something to do with the water and elevation level. (original or famous) ray's is the best though. its on 12th street and 6th avenue. i have memories of friday nites there when i was 5 and my dad worked in the city. oh so good!!
whats to be wary about broadway shows? as long as you dont see caberet or taboo..obviously wacked out stuff..they are amazing..phantom of the opera, 42nd street, crazy for you, les mis, jekyll and hyde..etc. etc.
the village is the most fun place i think to walk around and shop and my favorite place to eat is little italy.
if you stay in jersey or long island you can hop on the train for like 12bucks and you're in NYC in under an hour from central jersey and central to west LI.
Cabaret..totally wanted to see that.
i wanna see Nine and Movin Out and Wicked too. waiting for the after broadway sales. anyone up for Thoroughly Modern Millie there's an amazing sale going on and i think i'm gonna go!
when you go see movin out let me know i am so in!
Phantom of the Opera sounds like it would be awesome to see. I might try to go if I have the time (and money).
Hmm. If it really doesn't take that long to get into the city by train, then I'll probably just stay somewhere in Jersey. That'll give me an excuse to drive down to visit the Princeton congregation again. BTW, does anyone on here live near Princeton, or possibly even go to that congregation?
no but i have a friend who works there
the train from NJ is more than 12 bucks, dude. for me, it happens to be 13 PLUS that stupid $3 for the path. THEN a metrocard. wow
Ooooh..can we make an event to go dancing in the city to a place that like..the underaged population of ezabel can go? I really feel like dancing..Forreste and I are going to show off our skills!
we used to go swing dancing in the city every sunday... but now its turned into this huge group of lame people that go the first sunday of every month... it was good while it lasted.
oh boy how did i get involved. i mean how many times can i do the roger rabbit. will you never be satisfied??
Never!!! It'll be funnnn
go to a movie in the park...monday nights in the summer pull up a blanket and watch old movies at bryant park
That sounds like it would be fun. I wonder if they'll be starting that early enough this year for me to go.
just start your night late... if you're going out... start at like midnight or 1.. and then around 4 or 5 leave wherver you are..
and see the interesting and sometimes amazing stuff that happens on the streets.
