Musical influences

thewalkhome by thewalkhome · Jan 13, 2004 · 341 views · Journal

Currently listening to: The Clash (1st album). I only mention this because I feel like it sets the mood for what I am about to bring up...musical influences. I find myself listening to this album, and realizing just how much I have (musically) learned about from each stage of music that I have absorbed myself in. For example..I listen to the Clash or Ramones and hear all of the background vocals, and i remember how i always tried to learn and replicate them, even just by myself in my room as a kid. Then I'll listen to early Weezer and remember learning those songs when I was like 12 and how often i repepated that blue CD. Ill put in Elliott Smith and see acoustic similarities. OR maybe it'll be the Promise Ring, Superdrag, or the Beatles, or all those pop punk bands and all thier teen angst...I may be 22 now, but i can still have teen angst...i think. But see, it doesnt just carry over for musicians. For anyone into music at all, you can usually listen to a CD (or mixtape, ive made many of those...) and it amazes me how it PERFECTLY brings back a time, place, goal, girl, smell, or whatever. Anyway..I've just never put up a journal before, and so I figured I'd put out what was on the top of my head. Plus Tina is very persuasive.

Nice journal (maybe sometime you can help me convince my bf that the beatles are worth considerating)...however I am wondering how long it will take till someone suggests that this would find a better home in the music forum.

thewalkhome #2.1 thewalkhomeOG 2003

well i thought of that...but considering that the journal definition was "journal: A personal record of occurrences, experiences, and reflections kept on a regular basis; a diary", i felt that this was more than anyhting a reflection. It was less a forum for dicussing music and more about how at that moment i was thinking about how cool it is how some little plactic discs can remimd you of where you were a long time ago. i dunno.

thewalkhome #2.2.1 thewalkhomeOG 2003

i listened to abbey road today for the 1st time in a while...its definitly not my fav beatle album (white album is so incredible) but...wow..the whole theme and concept thing is incredible every time.

OH MY GOSH! I just listened to it today and I totally agree with you. I love the song "Because"-its chilling. And I do love the connection of songs for the second half. Even tho Let It Be was the last record the beatles released, Abbey Road was the last album recorded. I find it totally ironic that one of the last songs on their last album was "The End."

Depending on my mood, White album and Sgt. Pepper are my fav albums. Helter Skelter is hands down my fav song. If I am trying to convert someone to a beatles appreciator, I have them listen to that one first.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

i DO like Helter Skelter and Because. decent songs.

thewalkhome thewalkhomeOG 2003

try and get a hold of elliott smith's cover of "because"..its amazing. id have to say tho that "something", "happiness is a warm gun" and "in my life" are my fav bestles songs.

T
toxicgirlOG 2003

"Happiness is a Warm Gun"-GOOD SONG, the title usually turns ppl off tho. "Something" is a great song too. As a Beatle, George Harrison didn't write as many songs, but songs like that were amazing. "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" is on the same level.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002

"Something" is one of my absolute favorite songs ever.

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002

my favorite is "i'm looking through you", i think. soo amazing. also the wallflowers do a cover over it. (KATIE! haha!)

guilderbellsuck #3 guilderbellsuckOG 2003

interesting. Yeah I remember being a kid and learning drums by ear and all that stuff. Way cool. I cannot tell you how many times I will sit by my set blast out a random CD and play the whole thing through. My current favorites right now are Alice in Chains - Greatest Hits, Singles Soundtrack, Pearl Jam - Ten, Dream Theater - Awake, Anything by Queensryche, Filter - Short Bus and a whole big mess of other stuff in my collection. By the way RCH is the hottest girl ever.

where'd you go now that everybody knows
and we did a couple shows out there?
look at me, I can write a melody
but I can't expect a soul to care
kissing the bride, 45 minutes a side
this was my dream - played out rocking routine

violetboregaurd #6 violetboregaurdOG 2003

yeah I gotta agree with the musical influence page. I think that its amazing how you can have a sound track for your life and not even realize you are building it. Then you turn around and there are these songs that promote so much more than just entertainment. rock on.

juicymango #7 juicymangoOG 2003

Ok i'm gonna try to do this without looking at anyone else's comments or anything so that my thoughts aren't influenced by them... The soundtrack of my life? I think it would start out with Niemen who is a Polish singer from the 70's i think, my dad listened to him when i was little and then i grew to love his music when I got older. And my teenage years were .. at first stupid dance music and stuff like SWV and crap, haha... and then I discovered radio stations other than Z-100 and I got super into Pearl Jam, that was my favorite band all through high school. Blind Melon - that whole CD oh man so good. Also 311. Love it. And the Cranberries, HUGE part of my life. HUGE.

after high school... for some reason nothing is standing out in my mind at the moment! I got really into rap for a while hahaha I was a huge DMX fan back in the day. And Jay-Z. Maybe that's why no bands stand out... it was rappy for a while.

Oh wait I loved Third Eye Blind. They were my first concert EVER. That was rad. Not a big fan of their new stuff tho, i duno i grew out of it or sumtin.

And thennnn... System of a Down. Thursday (for a while). Incubus. DEFTONES.

Now.. I love Static X and Coal Chamber. Do they influence me... not really... They're definitely the soundtrack of the past coupla months.

The best music for camping is Creedence Clearwater Revival and Tom Petty. Hicks rule!!

I've always been a huge fan of Sheryl Crow and Fiona Apple. Can't wait for Fiona's new album to come out. I used to like Jewel but now she just annoys me immensely. These chicks were a huge influence on me though, heh. Definitely loved "chick music" in my day. Still do sometimes.

My sister and I used to make lists of songs that meant something, like "summer songs" or "camping songs" and that was so great, haha i wonder if i still have those lists somewhere. It's great how a song can evoke a memory SOOO CLEARLY. And sometimes it's memories you want to forget so it's annoying. Haha

No one cares about this, haha, that's the best part I think.

juicymango #7.1 juicymangoOG 2003

Wow.. this is a weird coincidence. That guy Niemen who i just talked about, I looked him up on the internet, and he died two days ago. Weird. Oh man, it made me really sad!

fivezero #7.2 fivezeroOG 2003

THIS was fun to read.

the soundtrack to my life? it started with my moms music: Beatles, Janis Joplin, James Taylor, Creedence, Simon and Garfunkel, lots of mo-town stuff, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Delfonics, Temptations, etc.

i don't remember much of what i liked when i was really young. i remember liking Guns and Roses and Faith No More a lot. then i got into some rap. Ice-t, Ice Cube, Dr Dre and Snoop, i remember when Biggy first came out, i loved that. then i got into all that grunge stuff. Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Temple of the Dog, Brad, etc. i was WAY into Nine Inch Nails and i still like them a lot. i liked Weezer a lot too and still do.

all that bled into a pretty varied taste in music. i still like some rap, very little lately because of the complete lack of quality. i like slightly more obscure stuff nowadays, mainly because most mainstream music is boring and i accept and enjoy different sounding groups.

i'm kinda liking all the post-grunge thats going on, like Queens of the Stone Age, Mondo Generator, Melvins, Earthlings?, Brant Bjork, Fu Manchu, etc. theres a lot tiny bands out now that are doing really fun and interesting things like the way bluesy Black Keys, ex-Faith No More frontman, Mike Patton's projects--Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk and Fantomas. i like some of more pop-indie type stuff like Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Interpol, White Stripes.

i like a tiny bit of emo. very, very little. Coheed and Cambria, Movielife, Rx Bandits and thats basically it. some english stuff tickles me. Radiohead [love these guys] Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, Stereophonics, Travis even. this has gotten long, but thats a simple timeline of my musical evolution. i wonder if anyone will get this far, lol.

juicymango #7.2.1 juicymangoOG 2003

Haha nice, that was fun to read too!!

I LOVE Queens of the Stoneage. Love Dave Grohl beyond belief, the man is amazing.

fivezero #7.2.1.1 fivezeroOG 2003

Dave Grohl is the hardest working man in rock! he did drums for QOTSA, Killing Joke, and now he started another band called Probot with the dudes from Motorhead! all this BESIDES running his main band Foo Fighters.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

Did you ever see the video he did with Jack Black.. for the song "Low"... it's so hilarious and disturbing.

thatdarngirl #7.2.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Rx Bandits are definetly not emo.

skaorsk8 #7.2.2.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

yeah but stereophonics are awesome! i have spent many nights driving through backroads like a manaic to "last of the big time drinkers"

skaorsk8 #7.3 skaorsk8OG 2002

I want to do this too.

Musical influences have changed soo much over time...from the beach boys and chuck berry when I was little...to punk in high school, being all about sublime and the suicide machines, then moving to england and being subjected to atomic kitten, ronan keating and s club 7 (BTW i caught a Steps video at the gym yesterday. What crap. My dad loved them though - he has their greatest hits.)

For my high school graduation party, I asked everyone to just buy me CDs...(typical right)...I was totally excited when I got the Doors, Credence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, and some old Tom Petty...the families in the hall kept asking me "are these CDs for your parents? are you SUURE they're for you?"

The first winter I was in England, I was at a party at some rec hall when all of a sudden, some of the WORST music I've ever heard came on..instantly everyone ran onto the dance floor. I was like "what is this CRAP!?!" and someone goes "It's ABBA!" and started dancing again...I could not believe such horrid music could be created on purpose.

I would really love to create a soundtrack for my life. It would have a lot of like, jazz/punk, for lack of a better name...something along the lines of Hoobastank's "Can I Buy You a Drink", but mixed with Filabuster and their sublime tinge. (Has anyone ever heard Filabuster on here??)

I'm still impressed by anyone who can play an acoustic guitar, especially to take a great song and make it sound better acoustically. Slow it down, give it a different twist, and make it yours.

fivezero #7.3.1 fivezeroOG 2003

i was a HUGE Sublime fan. and i've heard Filabuster, cuz they were on Skunk Records WITH Sublime. the Ziggens were fun too. And if i could have a LIFE soundtrack? it'd be a collabo score by Danny Elfman and John Brion.

skaorsk8 #7.3.1.1 skaorsk8OG 2002

wow dude. i love the ziggens. surfin buena park is a favorite of mine. seriously great.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

i feel so close to you, dan

skaorsk8 #7.3.1.2 skaorsk8OG 2002

also...brian...were you watching that guy (i forget his name) play guitar at sal's house?? playing that jazz/blues kinda stuff?? i was in awe

glad you feel so close to me, i can give you a hug later

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

rowr! that was Jesse Voucus. he's amazing at guitar. i love listening to him jam. he's all round nice guy too.

malibu #7.3.2 malibuOG 2001

for the longest time i absolutely refused to acknowledge that "buy you a drink" was played by hoobastank. just didn't sound like them. then i accepted it and grew to like them.
