Raise me
Ok so i've been at my job for 13 months.
I slack off too much and I know it, and my self-diagnosed Adult-A.D.D. sometimes causes me to get distracted and/or forget stuff that comes back and bites me in the butt later on. But most of the time, I work really hard and do a good job overall. In fact, I've been told that I have been here longer than any other bookkeeper they've had since Erika, who used to do the bookkeeping I think from like 1998-2000 and then she became an attorney and is doing legal work here now. Supposedly they hired some real "geniuses" in the past couple years that they had to fire after a month or so of work. And Erika had to do bookkeeping again for a while, which is really stupid, because she's a lawyer now. And the last bookkeeper quit after 11 months because she couldn't stand the insanity, rudeness and lack of respect from the lawyers, especially my insane boss. I have two bosses, one is sorta nice, and the other's insane. Absolutely insane. So this girl, she went back to her old job at Fleet bank, which suposedly was a big paycut. That's how much she hated it here.
And then they got me. I caught on to everything pretty fast, coming from a background in accounting and also in computer support, learning new software was cake. And stuff doesn't really bother me. People don't bother me, lawyers who have no people skills whatsoever and decide to just yell at everyone they see... they don't bother me, I know that's just the way they are, I don't care I just do my job. I have my own office kinda away from everyone else, so it's pretty quiet in here most of the time, and I don't really get bothered too much. So here I am, at the same job for over a year. Which is kinda an accomplishment in itself cos usually by the second month I get bored and start lookin for something else.
So.... I really wanna ask for a raise, but I don't know how to proceed, and I'm a little nervous about it.
I have no idea who to even ask. Do I ask Erika, the ex-bookkeeper who trained me? Would it be going over her head to ask my boss? Do I write a note requesting a review? They don't do a regular yearly review here, AHHH I have no idea what to do. And I really need and want a raise.
Keep in mind these lawyers are not very nice. So I'm nervous. I just want a raise. Just give it to me. Come on. Haha
OH yeah.
Also, I've taken on a lot of responsibilities in the past few months. I'm sooooo busy all the time. I think I deserve a raisey...

have they given you a review? i had one like a week ago and haven't heard back about a raise. =/
Nope, as far as I know, they don't do reviews unless you ask for them, and I'm just not sure if i should ask my boss, or the lawyer who trained me, who I see more as my supervisor I guess. There's only 14 people in the company, me, 1 file clerk, 1 receptionist, 6 lawyers and 5 secretaries. So it's not liek a big corporation that does things formally and "by the book"
right neither does mine, but you have to start sometime. i was their first official review. my boss just returned from vacation...i'm going to approach him about the possible raise because i need it.
oh i see. Interesting. So should I just ask for one?? ahhh i'm so stupid.
heck yea. especially after taking on additional responsibilities they owe it to you.
look at it this way: you're not gonna get fired if you ask for a raise. the worst that could happen is they say no.
what if they suddenly start analyzing my slacking habits, and fire me? haha
hrm, well in that case, maybe you don't deserve a raise haha
i just got a raise!!! $1.50 yesssssss go ask for a raise this feels so good
wooohoooo!!! awesome. $1.50 would be nice, that would be just right!
yes i needed this so much. ive been having anxiety over it alllll week.
wow! awesome! congrats!
Yeah you need to ask for a raise. You might want to schedule a meeting with both bosses. Then lay out what you've accomplished for the company and let them know what you need to work on, bosses love this. Then proceed to ask for the raise but in a very professional manner as your dealing with lawyers. Be pretty witty about it too...thank goodness ours come yearly!
