So Call Me Sheltered
Ok, so this past weekend I went to Chicago to visit my good friend Sara, who moved there last month for work. I knew she lived in the city, but I didn't think she lived smack dab in the middle of everything!! Turns out, she does. She's a block from Hard Rock Cafe, Rainforest Cafe, a few blocks from The Magnificent Mile (LOTS of shopping), and a few blocks from the Sears Tower, among many other things. I was amazed at all this.
Now, for me, this all was especially cool, because, even though I am almost 24 years old, I have never actually been into a huge city like that. Sure, I live really close to Cincinnati, but compared to downtown Chicago or New York, it's nothing....not even tons of cool shops and stuff in Cincinnati. My husband has been all over the country, so none of this was new to him, though.
I just had this feeling the whole weekend, thinking that this experience was so new, and so cool. We took a cab to some places, which was new for me (having never taken one before), and we almost rode "The El." I have never been on any type of subway before, so this would also have been cool. We even passed some guy on the street selling purses....almost bought one, too.
The whole weekend seemed so "new" to me, which is kind of sad, I guess, because I'm in my early 20's, and JUST NOW experiencing stuff like that. I guess it's different if you live close to a big city, but I never really thought about it, nor did I care, until now. Not that I had no clue what went on in a big city, but I had just never seen it for myself, you know?
Maybe I'm just rambling, but I thought it was interesting (in a not-so-cool kind of way) that most people have experienced "big city life" a lot earlier than I did.

We'll I havn't been to NY or Chicago since I was really, really young. This weekend i'll be goin to NY. So I guess this is the month for us Ohioans to expirence big city life. I'll speak on it next week.
Cool! Let me know how NY is...my husband has been there, and all weekend he was like "You think Chicago is big, you should see NY." Hopefully I'll get there this spring or summer.
Hey hun, at least you're experiencing it! It doesn't matter what age....have fun and enjoy!
ok, sheltered!
LOL!! How did I know that you would be the first one to say that? HAHAHA!!!
seriously...I think that's so weird that you've never seen any of that stuff. Never been on a subway (I mean, not that its anything great). You're right though...its different if you live near a big city and its nothing new.
well, i am rather sheltered too. i have never ridden on a bull. or milked a cow. or gone "roof riding". heck, i have never even laid down in the middle of the road while a car drives over me.
< Sarcasm > well i guess this weekend just got filled. < /sarcasm >
check , check , check-well i drove the truck that someone was roof riding on , and check.
i hate you. grrr. so frustrating. why must you always prove you are better than me.
i hate you too. because you are better than me
Um...me neither. I'm not a "farm girl" by any means. I just don't live near a big city where any of the stuff is available. They don't have a subway in Cincinnati, and the taxis aren't as widespread as they are in other major cities. There's still plenty of cool stuff...we're near some pretty awesome things...just not any of the stuff that, to some people, is pretty common.
i have an aunt, uncle and 2 cousins that live in cincy
Really? Are they in the truth? I might know them......
no unfortunately they're not. but call on them! (i don't know where they live though, i've never been there)
Hmmm....if you find out, let me know. Heck, I could even know them...I've lived in this area my whole life. Or I might know people who could call on them. :)
i guess it's possible. they moved there like 5 years ago, my aunts husband is an airline pilot, i'll try to find out exactly where they live.
what about a mechanical bull?
no. never. i refuse. (patrick, do not say ANYTHING)
didn't we talk about going to that place this summer at salsa dancing, when we were standing with vanessa? This we pre-race i believe.
it's possible, now, never mention it again. the boston girls tried to get us to go there, we point blank REFUSED.
everyone stay away from the evil colorado cafe!! (i bet like 80 of you have been there, too)
patrick....dude...i just can't go there...
dude it is the chance to let out your inner hick...
wow, thats something that should never be let out.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!
that's why patrick said it should never be let out.
call me sheltered but i've never played bass for Prince.
thanks God you're a country girl
No, not at all, actually. The area I live in isn't country, although there are farms nearby. But I'm about 10 to 15 minutes away from 3 different malls, Paramount's Kings Island is 5 minutes from my house, Cincinnati is 20 minutes away, and there are tons of other cool things to do around here. But Cincinnati is smaller than other cities, so there's no subway, and the city is so small you don't really need to take a cab from one place to another, so the demand for cabs isn't that great. It's just different when you're so used to a city being one way your entire life, and you go to a bigger city, and your whole perspective changes.
That's really cool, sounds like fun, i've never been to Chicago! Was it freezing cold and super windy?
My whole view of cities isn't that great tho, if I never go into NYC again in my life I won't care, havent' been there in over 2 years...
Philly's pretty cool.. some parts of it I guess.
Boston I LOVE but I haven't been there in like 5 years.
And I think that's about it... cities are kind of annoying though, i really don't think they were ever meant to exist, they're just crazy.
It wasn't freezing, although it was pretty windy at times. But we had a great time. I can't wait to go back.
:) actually I think it's called the "el" cause it's short for "elevated train".
Yeah....I didn't know that before going, but my hubby explained it to me while we were there...I'm not sure why I said subway...shows how much I know...hahahaha!!!! :):)
my coworker is in her 40s and has NEVER been to New York City until this past week when her husband had surgery. She's never taken a subway either (dont feel bad)
Hahaha...well, hopefully I'll do both before I'm 40. I'm only 23 now, so there's plenty of time. :)
i love the rainforest cafe!!!! they have an amazing one in disney world in florida nad it was my most favorite place to eat. so yummy and all the decorations and the whole waterfall in the restaurant was amazing!!!! i wanna go back there just for that. i think you can just go in iwthout going to disney but you still have to pay $10 to park.
the one in palisades closed...a while ago now...the waterfalls def. made me a little squishy
yeah, the one on long island closed too. I think the chain almost went bankrupt until some guy named Landry bought it (he runs a bunch of chains...including, umm...charter house)...so now it's doing a little better...but still not great
Courtney, I saw a Jamba Juice in Chicago. You like those, right? Or am I confusing you with someone else here?
yep! I just found out a few weeks ago that they are spreading now. We have one in the city finally. Did you try a smoothie?
No. :( I wanted to, but Tyler was pushing to go to the Children's Museum, so we passed. I thought of you when we saw it though!! :)
aww! hehe, well next time you'll have to get one. They are awesome. They don't have any in ohio yet though :-/
i LUV jamba juice!!! I have one almost every day!! or after surfing
if i was one of the three piggies.. i'd totally build a house made out of a wind chime.. because the big bad wolf.. would blow and blow.. and you know what.. it'd make sweet little melodies of music.. and i'd dance.. and i'm sure the big bad wolf would dance too.. because who doesn't like sweet melodic wind chime music. it soothes the sould. rocks the body. gets the wolf neked by the end of the song. thats it folks.. tha tha tha thats all folks.
u used my name a lot in there... that made me happy haha
