Freaking out in ASL
So in case anyone didn't already know I got voluntold into an ASL class that is being taught down at the Wall, NJ congregation. I say voluntold because I was basicly told by the ASL CO that I was now in the class. Of course it was still my choice to go or not to go, so I looked at it as direction from Jehovah as to where he wants me. So I've been in the class for a few months now and I must say ASL is just such an amazing language. It's just so much more expressive than the english language and where as in english you are trying to make a picture with words. In ASL you are literally making pictures, so at least for me it tends to stick with me more when it come to meeting and assemlby parts. So I'm starting to get the hang of it and I go to the bookstudy every wed night on top of my own meetings. So I always comment at least once at the bookstudy sometimes twice but there is still a lot i don't know. So anyway this is all just the background of what happened to me last nite. lol
So I got to the bookstudy really early last nite because I was supposed to go over something with the bookstudy overseer, who is also our class instructor, about me praying in ASL after the bookstudy. Usually he is there really early but this week he wasn't. So I'm sitting there and then one of the sisters who is there says something about me conducting. I look around and realized I'm one of only 3 brothers there and I'm the only servant. So I started to get a little nervous but there was still 5 minutes to go. Well another servant who is also in the class with me shows up and so I say something to him about conducting if Joel is late and he says to one of the sisters there "Do you have a head covering." Another brother that was there and I cracked up laughing. Of course I stopped when he pointed to me and says to her it's ok Mike will do it. So I asked him if he knew how to work the video system to play the DVD. He says yeah and then tells me he won't show me how to use it because then he would have to conduct. So we race around getting everything set up. So it's time to start and we are still getting things ready and I'm trying to get a prayer together in my mind in ASL and suddenly I realize my mind has suddenly gone blank. I can only remember a few signs and so I'm starting to freak out and get way stressed about it. So just as we get everything set up and I'm about to start, in come the bookstudy overseer. I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders and I go and sit down in my seat with my heart pounding. I think that was the most stressed out I've ever been over having to take care of a spiritual responsibility. Anyway that was my moment of freaking out in ASL.

Oh man! that would be so stressful. why didn't the other brother want to conduct?
that is admirable and reading your journal made me realize some things. Like Prayer, how is prayer conducted with sign language, does everyone look at the one giving the prayer? or when reading for BS....things you never think of or realize.
but it's admirable that you are able to help out and its such and encouragment
Well I don't blame him for not wanting to do it, I really didn't want to either. lol. He has more trouble than I do understanding ASL and has trouble comprehending the way ASL works.
Yeah everyone has their eyes open for the prayer well except for the person who is doing the praying. When we read scriptures we all just look it up and each read it on our own. The conductor waits a minute and lets people read then usually will ask a question.
you just 1 million meat. :) Keep up the good work, man! Jehovah will reward you much better than I ever could. You're selfless and loving toward your brothers and sisters. You obviously have great goals, and you're working hard at them. Plus you're reaching out. please except the gift.
Thanks man that's totally not why I wrote this but that's cool anyway. lol. Yeah it was hard at first but Jehovah so far has really been blessing my efforts. I find myself understanding more and more and really starting to feel more comfortable signing. I really need to work on my facial expressions though because that's a big part of ASL.
Thanks man.
my pleasure. I know you didn't write it for a reward.
One time I was in a fast food restaurant (yuck), but I saw these two kids walk in, and one was signing and the other was talking. It was amazing, they were laughing and having a good time. My heart went out to them. They NEEDED the truth! They needed to know that although they may have these problems now, they will be healed by our loving creator. I didn't know how to speak to them, though...so I didn't. I went out to my car...and struggled. Then I grabbed a pen, wrote a quick message on a New World Track, and a "Would you like to study the Bible?" tract, said a prayer, and ran back in. I introduced myself, got their names, and handed them the tracts. That's what made me want to learn another language (maybe even ASL one day).
tract dude, not track.
i'm a nitpicker okay???
lol, actually I usually am nitpicky about that, too. Totally did not mean to write track. So sorry (but I"m not going to fix it to spite you)
besides I wrote tract more than I wrote track!
Now that is a good example of boldly preaching no matter what may seem to be in your way. That's impressive that you did that. Who knows that may have started something.
I really hope so. Seed planted. They were really nice kids, too.
It's amazing the growth the sign language field has seen over the past couple of years.
good quick thinking toddy. it's funny, you never know what holy spirit can be motivating you to do
It just goes to show that you should always be prepared to give a witness--have a Bible and literature with you ALWAYS.
most deaf people don't see being deaf as a disadvantage, and will get really miffed if you tell them it is. odd but true.
saying, "sorry you can't hear, wouldn't it be great if you could" wouldn't be the right approach, maybe, "wouldn't it be great if we could all communicate with each other... people are divided for so many different reasons, one day we'll all be united, etc." well thats what I'd try to get across if I ever met a person who was deaf and could read lips really good.
Yeah it's a very taboo subject with the deaf, one best left for later. One of the main reasons is because the implants that they have now don't always work and when they do they don't always work correctly, plus they have to pretty much relearn how to communicate. It's totally not a subject you would bring up with the deaf to get them interested. The deaf don't view it as a disability since they have reached the point where they can function just about as well as anyone else.
Right- some deaf people have disowned family members for getting the implants. It's very controversial.
i did this one, but instead of in ASL .. i was lemon merengue pie
wow that is so different....but very interesting
Was this supposed to be a reply to something?
Do it up, bro. ASL is amazing. Last year my sister moved to Roselle Park and she attends the Nutley Deaf Hall. She is moving back home next month and will then begin going to the Deaf Hall in Wall. Everyone's really nice there. Have fun.
Oh so your sister is going to be joining our group down in wall?
Yeah I'm enjoying it so much. I wonder if I met your sister, I've been to 2 of nutley's meetings. hm.
there are a lot of old friends of ours in that cong bc the deaf bros & sis used to be with east hackensack
What? i can't hear you can you speak up?
Your so funny. :-P
