Rain rain go away come again another day

modestjesse by modestjesse · Jul 27, 2004 · 114 views · Journal

So we had a lot of rain today. Shortly after I got home from work the street got flooded, the sewers were backed up, and it didn't seem to want to stop. Well once the rain halted for a bit the sewers began to catch up, but my room, which is in the basement began to take on water. I heard the sump pump running and figured all was well. Apparently all was not well. The sound I heard was the sump running but it was also the sink where the sump dumps out over flowing. So water began to pour on the floor. No problem, open the window and put the hose out there so no more water, right? Nope. The pump couldn't get rid of the water faster then it was coming in. I moved a few things around to get off the ground or move to other areas of the floor that seemed ok. But I could tell it wasn't going to be good.

7pm rolled around and I realized I was going to miss my bookstudy. This bothered me because this was going to be my last book study in Jersey and with my friends there. They even brought deserts for a farewell to me. But I was at Home Depot renting a wet/dry vac to try to clear the water out. I get home to find that now when I get to the bottom of the stairs I'm stepping into water. This was no fun. I found a ring box floating through the room. I quickly had to move my computers off the ground. My dvd's and games needed to be moved. My xbox barely escaped death. But it was too late for my APC battery backup, it drowned.

As of right now there is 3" of water in the middle of my room and the water continues to come. My pc's are disconnected. Many posessions I was going to take on my move are under water. Boxes I had ready to go are now ready to be tossed out. Clothes are soaked, hopefully not ruined. I just wanted to cry I was so done, it's so frustrating to have no control over the situation. I have to take my parents to the airport at 4am, when I get back I will reasses the situation. But now I'm completly helpless. We don't have flood insurance so I just hope my losses aren't extreme. I feel like I'm getting kicked to the ground...again.

Time to go check on it again. Roll with the punches...

That stinks man. Our basement flooded about 10 years ago or so. It was my brothers room at the time. I think we had about 14" of water. The cat was stuck sleeping on his bed hahaha, she was freaking out.

I don't think anything really got ruined, just very wet. But there weren't any electronics or anything down there really...

I hope it works out man

Well we're at 5" now and about 70% of my earthly possesions are either in water or under water. Guess this just completly simplified what I'm packing for the move. Either that or someone is telling me something.

Do you want us to all come over with blow dryers when the water goes away? I'm not even joking.

thatdarngirl #5.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Or..OR! Better idea that won't make the power in your house short out:
Do you want us all to come with lots of plastic bags and quarters and bring all your stuff that can be placed in dryers to the nearest laundry-mat place? The rest of the stuff is where the blow dryers can come in again.

i totally support this idea!

Well all the water seems to have subsided. I can actually walk down there with out getting wet now. So I've got a dehumidifier going and hopefully everything will dry out by Saturday.
