On Personality Types and Sorts

sunshyne by sunshyne · Aug 9, 2004 · 370 views · · · Geek

Lately I've been really into analyzing why ppl act the way they do - the whole nature vs. nurture scenario. Are we born with a personality? Is our personality shaped by our surroundings? Like just about everyone else that has contemplated it, I’ll admit that we are who we are bc of both factors. I do think however, that a lot of what makes us individuals is from birth. I’m definitely into this whole Myers-Briggs Personality Typing business. It’s helped me a lot to understand where others are coming from and what motivates them outside of their experiences. Esp with ppl that I think have had similar experiences to my own, but seem to react in a completely different way.

Here is the shortest test I’ve ever seen on it.
http://bloginality.love-productions.com/index2.php

A more detailed test:
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

The definitive test (this only gives you a partial result for free, but if you save your answers and ez message me I can score it for you):
http://www.advisorteam.com/temperament_sorter/register.asp?partid=

Many companies also use this type of test in their human resources dept. I’ve been told it is great for career counseling. (It recommended I pursue a career as a social worker or minister. Funny, huh?)

I’m interested to hear what others think about this. Do you think it’s valid or helpful? Do you think it’s phony and a waste of time? Have you taken a test like this? What were your results?

BTW – I am ENFP. Here is a little about me:
Portrait of the Champion (eNFp)
Copyrighted © 1996-2004 Prometheus Nemesis Book Company.
The Champion Idealists are abstract in thought and speech, cooperative in accomplishing their aims, and informative and extraverted when relating with others. For Champions, nothing occurs which does not have some deep ethical significance, and this, coupled with their uncanny sense of the motivations of others, gives them a talent for seeing life as an exciting drama, pregnant with possibilities for both good and evil. This type is found in only about 3 percent of the general population, but they have great influence because of their extraordinary impact on others. Champions are inclined to go everywhere and look into everything that has to do with the advance of good and the retreat of evil in the world. They can't bear to miss out on what is going on around them; they must experience, first hand, all the significant social events that affect our lives. And then they are eager to relate the stories they've uncovered, hoping to disclose the "truth" of people and issues, and to advocate causes. This strong drive to unveil current events can make them tireless in conversing with others, like fountains that bubble and splash, spilling over their own words to get it all out.
Champions consider intense emotional experiences as being vital to a full life, although they can never quite shake the feeling that a part of themselves is split off, uninvolved in the experience. Thus, while they strive for emotional congruency, they often see themselves in some danger of losing touch with their real feelings, which Champions possess in a wide range and variety. In the same vein, Champions strive toward a kind of spontaneous personal authenticity, and this intention always to "be themselves" is usually communicated nonverbally to others, who find it quite attractive. All too often, however, Champions fall short in their efforts to be authentic, and they tend to heap coals of fire on themselves, berating themselves for the slightest self-conscious role-playing.

wow. psychobabble never gets old, i guess.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

so i guess that would be phony and a waste of time, huh?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

nah. when i take these tests, a lot of the time, i contradict the tests summation of me. it's kinda frustrating sometimes.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

ok, i'm an an ENFP, it says:

"you are Extraverted, intuative, Feeling , Perceiving.
This makes your primary focus on Extraverted Intuition with Introverted Feeling.

This is defined as a NF personality, which is part of Carl Jung's Idealist (Identity Seeking) type, and more specifically the Champions or Inspirer."

Sure, why not?

I'm INTJ. I knew I should have been a chemist.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

rare type - no more than one percent of the population! your type and mine are perfectly complementary, let's be friends.

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

which test do you suggest taking, Summer?

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

i would go for the first one bc its only four dual choice questions. if you think whoa thats not me at all try the last one-thats the real deal, save your answers, send them to me and ill score them (so you dont have to pay $15). the questions on the middle test are sort of obtuse.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

i'm INTP, i pretty much fit the description

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

you seem very outgoing for an "i". are you more extroverted on the web than you are in rl? i always wonder about that. bc it seems like some of my friends are much more talkative in text than in person.

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

hmm, okay this is only sort of related. But I can email, or talk in person much better than I can on the phone. I hate the phone...

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

i dont like the phone much either. i have to really be close to a person before i can tolerate talking to them on the phone.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

i'm not a phone person either. no matter how close i am to the person, i really don't talk on the phone. the only way i will talk on the phone is if i'm talking to my friends that live far away

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

that's very close to how I feel, too.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

it just depends. i have no problem being the first to approach someone....and starting up a conversation.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

you may be on the fence then with the introverted/extroverted. my sister is like that. out of 10 questions, she answered 5 as introverted and 5 as extroverted. on the other hand, out of 10 questions, i answered 1 as introverted and 9 as extroverted.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

yeah i beleive i am both. it all depends on situations, circumstances

but as the description said, i don't let people into "my world (deep)" as easily.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

that could be an interaction of the introversion and thinking parts of you. bc relying on thinking would make you more likely to say whats on your mind. you would be motivated to get the truth out, inform and set things straight despite your desire to keep things private.

iwz iwz ·

I used to test as an ENTP, but I'm more of an INTP now. I can be extroverted, but am perfectly fine being introverted.

I took the simplest test there, and came out as INTP. The description fits me perfectly haha:

"you might be more likely to work on the concept of how to do a blog (read: eZabel), but not be as excited to keep it up"

so true of me hehe

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

Ian, I could see how you say you might be either introverted or extroverted, and you're capable of both, but wouldn't hanging out with your Mikayla be considered extroverted? I mean, you're not 100% alone, right? It's not like you don't speak with Mikayla, or rarely do. Even if you aren't speaking, you're communicating with her all the time (when you are with her). Am I right? Someone help me!

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

i think introversion/extroversion probably evens out with age. thats my opinion.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

i still hear blah blah blah yakkety schmakety

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

yeah. me too.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

yes i know. this subject holds no interest for you. do you notice that everyone that responded so far has a second letter "n" when we are in the clear minority making up only no more than 15-20% of the total population? thats bc iNtuitive types are more interested in internalizing experiences.

even as i type this, i know you are reading blah blah blah yakkety schmakety...

uh did they take these tests?

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

famous ppl? im sure a lot do. however, mostly i think they get on the list by means of an educated guess. like: Ariel from the Little Mermaid (pretty sure she did not take the test) she's extroverted (stimulated by new experiences), she's imaginative (thats the N), she's drive by feelings (as oppposed to thinking through the consequences of her actions) and she's easy going when it comes to planning (thats a P).

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

I am ENFJ....and so was David, King of Isreal, apparently. Hahaha. :)

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

But that was for test #2. Test #1 said I'm ISFP.....intraverted, sensing, feeling, perceiving. Odd.

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

I think test #1 is more accurate, though.

ISFP Strengths

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warm, friendly and affirming by nature
Usually optimistic
Good listeners
Good at dealing with practical day-to-day concerns
Flexible and laid-back, usually willing to defer to their mates
Their love of aesthetic beauty and appreciation for function makes them likely to have attractive, functional homes
Take their commitments seriously, and seek lifelong relationships
Likely to value and respect other's personal space
Likely to enjoy showing their affection through acts and deeds
Sensuous and earthy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ISFP Weaknesses

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not good at long-range financial (or other) planning
Extreme dislike of conflict and criticism
Focused on enjoying the present moment, they may appear lazy or slow-moving at times
Need to have their own space, and dislike having it invaded
May be slow to show their affection with words
Tendency to hold back their thoughts and feelings, unless drawn out
May become overly cynical and practical

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i think that #2 test is hard to understand. its based on jung. some of the wording seems misleading to me. so isfp, then check this out: http://keirsey.com/personality/spif.html you think that fits better?

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

Hmmmm....sort of. As far as fine arts and crafts and things goes (music, cooking, singing, dancing, things like that) then absolutely. But the other parts don't really sound like me.
I'm unidentifiable. :(

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

whats interesting to me is that one result was extroverted and one result was introverted which leads me to believe you are probably a guardian type. that is largely a guess since i dont know you, but guardians often arent a self actualizing type. they are slightly more inclined to bend to others. read these and see what you think.

interesting. one of my close friends is an enfj. do you think it sounds like you?

http://keirsey.com/personality/nfej.html

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

yes and no. Yes, in the sense that the type is similar to a Provider, which seems to be more like me. I'm a "taking care of everyone" type of person. But some of the other descriptions don't really sound like me.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

provider, thats esfj. i like those guardian types. they make the world go round.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

I don't remember which of these I took Summer but I printed out one of my results from the other week when we were doing them and all it says it Idealist (NF) and then the explanation. We didn't narrow it down further did we?

I enjoy this because I like understanding why I do things, not just other people.

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004 ·

i think we can agree on infj.
