Management Material?
So......I love my new job. I'm not exactly sure why, because there are a number of things I love about it. But I actually like the people I work with, they are very respectful around me with their language and other stuff, like not smoking and refraining from "jokes", and anything that might offend me, since they know I'm not like that (which is hard to find in a restaurant environment, since that industry is a very stressful one, hence the constant foul language, smoking, etc.), the managers are really awesome about giving me time off for meetings and service and stuff. They have been really great about my schedule. AND I got promoted to Server Trainer within the first week of the restaurant being open. I love having more responsibility.
Speaking of responsibility.......
I found out Friday that one of the managers has put in her notice there. That means they'll be searching (although I'm not sure when) for someone to replace her. I'd LOVE for that someone to be me. Adam thinks I'd be great at it, since I already love the job, I have lots of management experience, and other factors that sort of play into it.
Problem is, I haven't been with the company that long. I know they like promoting from within, but after only 2 months? Seems a little hasty.
Anyways, I want to let my GM know that management is something I'd be very much interested in, without sounding like I think he should make me a manager NOW. How can I approach him (he's very cool and laid-back) and let him know that, and sound super-professional at the same time? LIke, maybe just let them know it's something I'm striving for, and let them keep their eyes on me....I don't know.
Any suggestions would be GREAT. :)

wear a sandwhich sign that says, " I AM MANAGMENT MATERIAL!"... works every time.
hahahaha.....that might work. :)
Just take on more responsibilities. Over to take over some of the ex-managers old responsibilities while they find someone.. then they'll just choose you after you do a good job with it. BAM BOOM. i win
Wow....good advice. I like that idea. The GM had already suggested a few weeks ago, having me do the schedule soon, which is currently the leaving manager's job...maybe I'll ask him about that today. :)
listen to me in life, i know it all.
i just pretend not too. because then people start getting in lines to talk to you and constant phone calls.. then before you know it, i'm in bed and there's hordes of people outside of my house trying to get answers.. i'm too tired for that
2 months is plenty of time for them to get to know you. Be confident that you can do it, and tell them so. By now they should know you well enough to know what you're capable of. Don't look at it as a promotion. Rather, look at it as applying for a new job with two feet in the door already.
Sell yourself.
best way to do it, get a gun, then go to your manager and say look, make me a manager or I'll kill you and your entire family. wait, scratch that, just get me 200 million dollars and a jet to bolivia!!!
Well, my GM wasn't in today, but I'm going in tomorrow (on my day off) to chat with him. I did talk to another manager (who I'm really cool with) and asked his advice, and what he thought were the key things to do to get noticed.
He gave me some good advice, so combining that with what you guys have said (except for the gun thing...Matt....hmmmmm *shakes head with pity*), I think I have a pretty good shot.
Thank you!! (And if you feel the need, keep the words of wisdom a'comin'!!) :)
YO!! Check ME out!! So, I spoke with not only my GM today, but ALSO the corporate trainer for the company, and I let them in on my goals and such. The corporate trainer said they already had their eye on me, because they consider me very responsible and capable, and that they were going to do the neccessary stuff to get me involved in the Manager's Associate Program.
So basically, I'm gonna start the needed training to become a manager.
YYYYYYYYYEAEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! :)
