I am so out of here

thefunkyfresh by thefunkyfresh · Nov 3, 2004 · 306 views · Journal

Well I finally went and did it. I typed in www.hotjobs.com into my browser and hit the old enter key. Yesterday was my employee review, and I did extremely well. I better have, cuz I've been busting my butt here like crazy. I work for a company through a vendor and it was the vendor who interviewed me, they don't really what i do day to day so they have to go by what the site managers tell them. Well, honestly I don't think I could have done any better, the only knock they had against me was that I have been a few minutes late a few times. Each of the managers had great things to say about me. They said I was an elite employee and that I basically have nothing to improve on.

So I get my yearly raise... drumroll...
$2,000

$2,000?!!?? that equates to about a 94 cents an hour raise. That's not even enough for me to buy lunch every day. So I very politely ask what I would need to do to get better compensated for the effort that I am putting in. Well, her answer is that the vendor has a cap on how much they can pay us because of their contract and whatnot... blah blah

and I'm thinking to myself, man, what would they have done if I had a BAD review? DOCK me? ugh.

The company just merged and they're consolidating positions, so there's little chance of getting hired by the main company away from the vendor. so this job is going nowhere, I need to do something else.

The thing is, I don't know if I really even want to be in IT anymore. I'm thinking of maybe trying to get into graphic design or something... ugh, i dunno. I hate corporate america with a passion. Anybody got any job leads they can hook me up with?

you know what i love, is working part time... this way, if you work a full week, you get paid more, and everyone is impressed - but if you dont' show up, people just think "argh! part-timer! i am so jealous!"

anyway maybe this is your chance to find part-time work - pray about it. i have a friend who was in college and behind on his field service time and needed CRAZY money to pay his debts. well, he prayed about it, and found a job involving a grant (get paid $X,XXX for working for the summer.) A week later he broke his wrist, so he couldn't go to work, but he still got paid. He went out in service instead. Caught up on his time, and got a good amount of money to pay his bills. Somehow, it all worked out. (PS - you might know this kid.)

true that-working part time rocks. you will just have to find a sugar-mamma to marry so you can continue it.

1 loaf of bread=$1.50
1lb of ham=$3.00
$1.50+$3.00=$4.50
all of that equals 20 days of lunch which is about 22 cents a day
water form water fountain is free.
What kind of luch are you getting?A 50 ounce new york steak strip
I beleive that thats enough of a raise.
THink of the possibilities.
If you save all that 2000$ you can buy over 500 boxes of fruit loops!

thefunkyfresh #4.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

that's pretty smart thinking. but that's some pretty lousy ham!

U
#4.1.1 ukrainiumOG 2002

thefunkyfresh #4.2 thefunkyfreshFounder

and wait a second, there's no way that would last me 20 days! first of all, ham doesn't last that long, esp ham that costs $3 a pound. 2nd, i could eat a pound of ham in like 3 or 4 days for lunch.

What do you know?

I know this will encombass many things. Lots of positions for computer graphics/graphic design people. Depends more on your credentials than experience. Currently I've come accross a lot that just wanted different degrees regardless of the work related experience.

thefunkyfresh #9.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

i have experience with illustrator, photoshop, quark, and dreamweaver. i wouldn't call myself a graphic designer by any means, although i think it would be something I could do. As far as web design, it's something i'm capable of. i know html and a little php (www.bandfromsociety.com)

originalsnob #9.1.1 originalsnobOG 2004

You're qualified for a lot more positions than I am.
Talked to this brother from bethel, he said he basically taught himself all the skills he has. Just by reading up (an avenue I might now take...thanks for nothin' Chubb) but, definately don't sell yourself short.

katiedid #10 katiedidFounder

now I'm glad mike didnt pass up M&Ms for the possibility of your company. Though it would have been awesome for you two to work together....again.

katiedid #10.1 katiedidFounder

actually, what am IIIIIIIIII talking about. My yearly raises are an extra $50/week so that's $2,600.00. So really Matt you're already making more than me (I'm assuming since everyone does) and your raise was only $600/year less.......QUIT YOUR WHINING. hehe, j/k.

thefunkyfresh #10.1.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

the reason I expected more is because it was my first raise, and I really felt like I proved that I was the best person they had. I wouldn't expect a big raise every time

rocksupastar #10.1.1.1 rocksupastarFounder

I totally agree with this... if you WORK hard, and really prove yourself, putting alot into a company... the worst thing to happen is for them to not reward you for that... Im all for you finding another job man... hopefully its something closer and something you like... like i said before, ill keep ya in mind for anything coming up over here.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

Yeah it ticks me off, because at my current rate of raises, it would take me a few years to reach what i think i should be making now... ugh... anyway thanks man.

englandkid #11 englandkidOG 2003

dont feel too bad, at my last job, after i had been there four months and had received my college degree do you think I got any kind of a raise?? Nope. Just a little more money since i was working more hours. I got rid of that job real fast. Also, they wouldnt let me work part-time. Even though I was originally!

flomojopoanode #12 flomojopoanodeFounder

ooo, ooo, I know! Pioneer! <--best career ever.

thefunkyfresh #12.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

you're right man, 100% right... just gotta find out a way to make money too

rocksupastar #12.1.1 rocksupastarFounder

hmm, sell drugs... that way you can make ALOT of money AND support your pioneering.

thefunkyfresh #12.1.1.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

sadly... i think there are people that have actually DONE that...

sunshyne sunshyneOG 2004

its so twisted that the fastest ways to make money are illegal and immoral and the honest jobs pay minimum wage.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

i know, right?!?!?!?! and its amazing how many people make alot of money by being soo immoral and illegal... it really is gross.

deanh77 deanh77Founder

yeah... I've heard stories. so unbelievably dumb.
