Am I selling myself short?

ekulu by ekulu · Dec 21, 2005 · 211 views · Journal

So today whhile I'm at work this girl from my congregation walks in and sees me. I'm shinkin she's gonna say hi, but she looks kind of concerned and says "Adam, you could such a better job. YOU're bilingual, you're legal, and you can do alot." It made me think. I mean, i'm happy with my little grocery storw Job. I'm pretty sure I could make more money somewhere else, but I like this job. It's actually no too hard, and the time passes quickly. I love being around all the people that come in and out the stores and just keeping busy. But in any case, maybe my working here will only be temporary. I don't know. For now i'm just gonna do this job the best i can. I don't really feel too ambicious.

Although, I'f i made more money, I could buy that PowerBookG4 laptop i've been wanting. Hmmm.

If you are happy, don't let anyone else convince you otherwise. there are many people making mega-bucks that hate their job & therefore life. You are just becoming employed again-think of this as your stepping stone. If you begin to feel dissatisfied, look for something else while you are still working-at least you will still have a job. some $$ is better than no $$

Did you ever hear the illustration of the fisherman in a small asian village? He would wake up early in the morning and fish with his son until about noon, catching just enough fish for the day and throwing the extra back. Then he would relax and spend time with his family.

One day, a businessman noticed how easily the fisherman caught fish, and how many more he could be catching and selling. The businessman said, "You have a wonderful opportunity to succeed in a fishing business. If you fished from early in the morning until late at night and sold your extra fish, in a few months, you'd have enough money to hire more workers to do the same thing. Then you could buy huge fishing boats and catch even more fish. Then you could start fishing in other parts of the world, building a huge company, making millions of dollars!" The fisherman asked, "Then what would I do?" The businessman replied, "Then you could retire. Get a small house in a little village, fish with your son in the mornings and enjoy your family for the rest of the day."

It's really supposed to apply to keeping our lives simple. I think about that illustration so often. If you're already enjoying your life, what's the point of pursuing a different path just because those around you think you should?

Okay..that is just dumb. Not your feelings on it, Adam, but what the girl said. We just had a talk on Tuesday about self-sufficiency and being satisfied with what we have (err..unless you have that talk tonight).

We talked about this in my education class- this society promotes the attitude that you aren't -something- unless you have a college degree and work in an office somewhere. College is not for everyone and it shouldn't have to be. There are lots of jobs that we need people to do and doing them should be viewed as acceptable by this society. What if everyone who worked in a store decided they should be doing something "better?" Who defined working in a shop as not better? You said it yourself, the time goes by fast and you like it. That sounds better then working in a stuffy office to me.

I had that talk last week.

I don't know what anyone else said, but here's what I'm thinking. You can turn your little grocery store job into a great opportunity to witness. As you're surrounded by fellow workers, and regular customers, you'll get to know them, and you'll be able to witness to them.

Also, what ever keeps you pioneering, man. Jehovah will see to it that you're taken care of. I'd rather be happy - at my job, and out in service - than making tons of money. But that's just me. There's a lot of money out there, and, yes, I'm sure you are more than capable of getting a well paying, "prestigious" job. But the MOST prestigious job is the one you've already got--being a full time pioneer, and servant of Jehovah. You are one of his personal spokesmen!! Any "humble", or "lowly" job that keeps you in that position is glorified by the real job you've got.

Keep up the good work. Do what makes you happy. You're making Jehovah happy with how you live. Why should you change to impress one lowly human. We're all lowly humans, I didn't mean that as an insult to the girl. But, yeh, What's more money, if you'd be miserable. Make enough to live, and that's all one needs. It's that girl who should be the one getting the concerned looks if she's having that sort of attitude that she has.

englandkid #8 englandkidOG 2003

I had an experience like this as well..... I work at Staples part time in addition to my full-time job not only becuase i could use the money, but i do happen to really like it. But sometimes my friends pressure me to quit. I think that you just need to do what you want.... dont people say do what you want, the money will follow? And with Jehovah's backing, you wont want anything!!
