Health Kick

specialk by specialk · Jan 9, 2006 · 314 views · Journal

So, today I decided to get in shape. Actually, I decided a while ago, but today is the day I actually put my plan into action. So I worked out.....hard. Not the usual walking on the treadmill crap I normally do, just to be able to say "I work out on a regular basis." I'm talking hardcore, crunches, lunges, push-ups, weights.....all the good stuff. I even broke a pretty good sweat.
Afterwards, I went to the store, having decided to alter my diet as well. I'm not overweight by any means, but the food I eat is more in the "junk" category, rather than the healthy foods I SHOULD have been eating all along.

And I.....stocked.....up........

I'm talking yogurt, cottage cheese('cause it's a great snack with some fruit, instead of other junk), wheat thins(instead of chips), protein bars (instead of candy), cookies(but the low-fat kind), oatmeal (to encourage myself to eat breakfast......because I don't......ever), juice, fruits, trail mix......and there are more goodies, but I won't bore you further with more unneccessary details.

So yeah, I'm overhaulin' my body, inside and out. I have never attempted it this heavily before. In the past I SAY I'll do it, and buy a few key healthy foods, but then a week later I'm sitting in front of the television munching on a Hot Pocket (sooooo goooooood), watching my DVR'd shows I missed the week before. But now I'm determined. So I need some help. Any workout tips, healthy eating tips, or general healthy lifestyle tips would be UBER appreciated.

Oh, and I started taking a multivitamin too. I hear they're good for you.

i'm gonna tell you right now, carbs are evil. don't pretend. i lie to myself sometimes, but the days that i eat only salads and meat and veggies, i feel a ton better.

also, start reading labels!! keep an eye on things with "total fat" and "saturated fat". That's a really good place to start.

on the subject of hot pockets, lauren eats them, which i find gross and weird, but they do have lean pockets that you may want to invest in as well. not that i'd eat that. :)

rocksupastar #2.1 rocksupastarFounder

nah those lean pockets taste like CRAP! i just eat like crap and then say to myself... self... what Macgyver episode will you watch next....

specialk #2.2 specialkOG 2003

I did get some Ham & Cheese Lean Pockets yesterday, as a substitute for the yummy goodness that is a Hot Pocket. I was going to try one for lunch today, but now I'm thinking maybe a salad would be better.
I'm craving a steak like you wouldn't believe though. But I know if I have steak, I'll have to have a baked potato to go with it. And with my baked potatoes always comes lots of butter and sour cream. Basically defeating the purpose of eating healthier.

I was really proud of myself last night though. Normally in the evenings I'll sack out in front of the TV and eat something, usually chips or another junk food. Last night, I still sat in front of the TV, but I had apple slices and some fat free cottage cheese (a small portion), and some multi-grain wheat thins. I was still a little hungry afterwards, but I felt better overall. Yay for healthy eating!!

i just don't know if i can give up coffee..... :(

specialk #3.1 specialkOG 2003

Oh, my in-laws did something like that. Apparently it works.....I dunno. But yeah, I'm gonna try to follow a schedule of some sort......I guess maybe I should write it down or something.

juicymango #3.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

yeah it just seems really healthy to eat lots of veggies and fruitas and stuff ... seems like it's gonna cleanse the system.. who knows.. we'll see how it goes. No salt, no eggs, no milk... no coffee.. ugh... yeah i don't know

juicymango #3.2.1 juicymangoOG 2003

juicymango #3.3 juicymangoOG 2003

web-toedchloe #3.3.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Anything British can't be good.

specialk #4 specialkOG 2003

I worked my butt off today.....literally. I'm still sore from yesterday's workout, but I motivated myself to exercise today anyways. I feel tired, but a good tired.

specialk #5 specialkOG 2003

And I got some of these things called "Luna Bars." Basically protein bars, but specifically for women. I ate one yesterday......and they were stinkin' good. Highly recommended. I might have to go stock up.

juicymango #5.1 juicymangoOG 2003

yeah those are really really really good

thatdarngirl #5.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

We used to get those...but I just wanted to eat them like they were snackies and they aren't.

juicymango #6 juicymangoOG 2003

to me it is a great mystery how people do not eat after 6 p.m. or whatever

i get STARVATIOUSLY HUNGRY around 9-10 p.m. almost every night, especially after a workout

and then i try to eat whatever the healthiest thing can be but the calories are still gonna be sitting there until morning and not be burned up

i guess this is why it's so good to get up early and work out in the morning, whichis another mystery to me that I just CANNOT fathom because I am not a morning person in the least bit

specialk #6.1 specialkOG 2003

I am so used to eating throughout the day, I can't imagine it either. Crazy lunatics.

juicymango #6.1.1 juicymangoOG 2003

i have been trying really hard lately not to eat after like, say, 8 or so. But it's so hard! I can't go to sleep when I'm hungry, it's just not possible. I have been drinking a lot of water too when I feel hungry late at night but sometimes that doesn't help either because it just makes me PEE A LOT and I still can't sleep. haha

at least lately i've been eating fruit when i get hungry at night, like oranges and pink grapefruit - i know fruit has carbs but at least it's natural fruit carbs and mostly juice which is good for you anyway...

socalgal #6.1.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

thing is, dont eat 2 hours before your normal bedtime. what helps me is i get the cravings really bad at night sometimes so i'll ahve the sugar free pudding, sugar free jello or the fudgecicles sugar free and theres no sugar, 50 calories and it's pretty satisfying all around

superhero superheroOG 2004

i like turkey wraps. 100 calories. mustard is no calories.

juicymango #7 juicymangoOG 2003

speaking of detoxing and cleansing your system, i have also been reading very very very disturbing things that i was not aware of

did you know that the colon carries anywhere from 5 to 25 meals worth of waste by-products in it. The average meal is about a pound. So you have 5-25 POUNDS of food just sitting in your colon... so that hamburger you ate last week is SITTING IN YOUR BODY....

and sometimes there are things that sit in your colon for years or even FOREVER

ugh this is grossing me out beyond belief

i think ..... i think i wanna get that stuff cleaned out.... haha...

iwz #7.1 iwz

byproduct tho... a lot of it actually gets digested.

hunkpapap #7.2 hunkpapapOG 2003

drink 2-3 highly concentrated glasses of lemon water every day for a week. This is highly helpful to detox...

juicymango #7.2.1 juicymangoOG 2003

yeah i've been doing that along with the detox diet.. and also drinking pure pomegranate juice (mixed with water because it's surprisingly bitter and strong when not sweetened)

specialk #8 specialkOG 2003

I worked out again today......and I'm gonna be in SO much pain tomorrow. My cheecks (and not the smiling kind) are UBER sore from those stinkin' donkey kicks, and the other booty workin' out exercises I do.

I gotta find a better eating plan. Eating lighter is apparently not giving me the calorie intake I need, because all day long I'm hungry, and I feel like gnawing my arm off.

socalgal #8.1 socalgalOG 2003

arent those donkey kicks awesome?

the pilates move....lay on your side.....bring both knees to a 90 degree angle and lift the top leg but keep dont move your hip just the leg and you'll feel the booty pain.

specialk #8.1.1 specialkOG 2003

Oooooh.....that's painful just thinking about it.

I tell you, the stress we girls go through to look good..........

socalgal #8.1.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

i know!

you can go rollerblading....that helps booty and legs. good alternate from the gym.

specialk #9 specialkOG 2003

This idea........did not last.

thefunkyfresh #9.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

two weeks?!?! come on I know u can do better than that! get back on the horse! i've been doing pretty good since the new gym opened, doing my best

specialk #9.1.1 specialkOG 2003

The eating part didn't last too long. I am SUCH a food person, I can't stand not having my comfort foods. I am, however, sporadically still working out......I'm trying to go for every day, but I am absolutely horrid at motivating myself. I need a goal.....it would be different if I were trying to lose weight, but I'm not.....so I need to figure out what might motivate me.

thatdarngirl #9.1.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I don't need to lose weight either, my motivation is just looking toned. Like..I want to sit down and have no tummy flab and I want my arms to look cut.

juicymango #9.1.1.2 juicymangoOG 2003

um get a physical and if you have anythiing "bad" like too much cholesterol or something that might motivate you .. i don't know

what do i know

malibu #9.1.1.3 malibuOG 2001

hmmm. try drinkjing lots of water. it'll fill you up and then you can rationalize the ideas of "hmph i'm already full. i dont need food." or heres a goodie: see how in comparision you begin to look so much skinnier compared to the other moms in the playground. there is something for motivation. pick the ugliest mom and work against her!

thefunkyfresh #9.1.1.4 thefunkyfreshFounder

how about just feeling better all the time? that's my main motivation, just to be healthy and feel good

web-toedchloe #9.1.1.5 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Avoiding heart disease could be a fantastic motivation:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/conditions/02/01/health.heart.reut/index.html

You want to be able to live to see your great-grandchildren, right? The only way to work out your heart is to exercise; it has nothing to do with how slim you are. You still need the cardio.

juicymango #10 juicymangoOG 2003

I'm still in it yo!

that detox thing for a week was crazy, but it was fun and a nice way to clean out the system i guess

we're still going to the gym 3-5 times a week and eating pretty healthy

i really want nachos today though
