Little Garden Update #2
hey why not an update? it's been about 20 days since the last one
I am such the gardenening lady lately, getting my (gloved) hands in the dirt and tending to my gardens - flower and vegetable - has become a realy favorite pastime of mine (i'm old). I really don't have too much time to pass, though, so I get to do this stuff like once a week if I can.. and today was the veggie garden's turn.. I got some sun finally, and spent some quality time with my babies, haha.
The baby tomatoes that i started from seed, they are still very small, so I decided to buy some larger plants so i can have tomatoes sooner. And they are already appearing yayyyyy!!
the cucumbers are starting to grow like a crazy jungle and i'm seeing some flowers that are about to bloom so that means cucumbers are coming soon... YAYYYYYYYY
the white dust on the ground behind the cucumber container - that's this natural bug killer stuff (called diatomaceous earth) that i put around the strawberry plants because they are getting attacked by ants... it's the same white stuff that i had all over my carpets a few months ago, which took about 2 weeks to finally vacuum up!! but since then i haven't had a single flea bite so.... i guess it works
anyway strawberry plants are doing good, already had two strawberries off of them and they were the best tasting things ever... and yeah i have a net around the garden to keep the birds and squirrels out...
and my tiny baby tomato plants are still goin.. not growing too fast but they're still there.. hopefully I will be able to actualy yield some fruit with these babies.... is tomato a fruit? who knows.
well that's that
aside from working and eating, gardening is how i spent my memorial day weekend
I have learned to stay away from the beaches and boardwalks on holiday weekends, it's not a good scene haha

cute jardin! i hear strawberries are hard to get going. summer has some little ones as well now. :)
time for some fried green tomatoes!
man even your pics of your garden look amazing....like if they're from good housekeeping or something!
i wish i had the patience to garden....not to mention the yard (ours is basically all cement cause of the pool)
well you could always pick up a "patio tomato" plant or two, you just need to put them in a container with one of those round wire thingies and they grow like crazy, and it's such a joy to have your own veggies
i can't believe i never thought of that when I had a balcony in the apartment for like 3 years
so dumb!
Hmmm, i think i need to check it out! thanks kam!
Im pretty sure tomatoes are fruit because they have seeds
They are a fruit, yehp. It's hardly ever thought of as a fruit, because they're usually eaten like a vegtable.
what about peppers then? they have seeds.
www.askoxford.com - "The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking."
I don't think whether or not it has seeds determines if it's a fruit or vegetable. I think it goes according to where the seeds are. Like, are the seeds inside... If so, then it is a fruit. Otherwise, vegetable.
I think a pepper is a fruit.
even though i have a net and all, something is taking little bites out of my strawberries
annoyng
sorry, they're delicious
I just got a bunch of potted veggies yesterday. I'm so excited! I got two tomato plants (one regular and one grape) and a bunch of spices I put into a strawberry pot. Right now, everything's on our deck, so I hope it's not too windy! I hate planting a garden in a house we rent, because it's not like we can take the soil with us, you know? Plus, my neighbor has an AMAZING garden, and I'd feel very inferior. So for right now, I'm waiting to see how I do with the tomatoes. I've been pumping them full of miracle grow...
NOT kidding, an eccentric sister we helped move, her house was being torn down, we moved the dirt & plants she liked !!! ARRAAAHHH!!!
That's nuts. Seriously. I've heard some messed up stuff in my time, but man. That's nuts.
your pictures make gardening look fun!
it is it is!! I kick myself for not doing this earlier. Could have totally grown tomatoes on my apartment balcony!!
That's awesome Kam!! You're gonna have some good foodies to eat!!! :)
wow! that is awesome! i havnt planted any fruit plants...just flowers..but isn't it sooo gratifying seeing them get huge?!? it's so exciting. i actually really enjoy being out there & weeding & watering and stuff! it's fun! i can't wait to have an actual garden like you do! :-)
