Subaru EXPLOSION

iwz by iwz · Jul 24, 2006 · 131 views · Journal

Pretty sweet.. on Thursday, we were getting ready to head to Philly for our District Convention. I stopped to get some cash on my way home from work. I was driving my wife's 98 Subaru Outback.

When I came outside and I tried to start it, the car battery exploded. It blew the protective covers (with the warnings) right off the holes, and sprayed acid all over the place.

The thing was smoking when I opened the hood.. crazy. I didn't realize batteries are explosive (although after reading the car manual, it does say that gases they emit are flammable and explosive.. sheesh). Turns out my dad's 83 or so Chevy Caprice Classic wagon burned to the ground when the battery blew. But mine just smoked a bit, and then stopped on its own.

Conveniently, I was parked at a Quick Chek, so I bought some baking soda and dumped it all over the place. Watching that stuff react is good times.

I replaced the battery with an Energizer I bought at Sam's Club for like $45. 3 year replacement warranty and stuff.. Hopefully this one doesn't blow up?

Surprising?!? Was it a no-maintenance battery? Any paint damage?

Haha, yes, very surprising. Park the car, get cash, turn the key, *BOOM*. Some guys by my car thought a tire popped or something.

No paint damage, that I saw. I'll have to check it out today. The acid got onto some tubes and stuff, but it didn't seem to do any damage at all, really. The car is driving fine, too, so that's good.

And I don't know what you mean by "no maintenance battery". We've never had any problems with it. Never had to charge it or anything.

'Older' batteries had caps you could pry off and top up, most new ones are sealed and the build up of gases seems less likely. (But i guess plausible)

dang! THAT's the reason your station wagon burned down? I don't think I knew it was the battery. I'm glad no permanent damage was done...besides 1 broken battery, I mean.
