My Dogs Are Freaks.....Seriously

specialk by specialk · Aug 26, 2006 · 181 views · Journal

Ok, I have two of the most adorable dogs on the planet, Oscar and Duncan. Cute miniature dachshunds, one long hair, one short hair, all sorts of adorableness going on there.
But they are TOTAL spazzes!!! Oscar(he just turned one in May) is normally calm, on his own. He's very loving, and will let just about anyone snuggle him. Duncan (he'll be 8 months old next month) is the retarded one....I mean seriously, he's a freak. This dog will literally FLY through the air to jump on the couch, constantly pop you either in the eye or on the nose or mouth with his nose, and then jump down from the couch and tear around the room, for no apparent reason other than to amuse himself. And he's SUCH an instigator!!!! Oscar will be asleep somewhere, and Duncan will just run up to him and play-attack him. Such a meanie.

Anyways, my point is, they're annoying at times. Love them to death, wouldn't trade them for the world, but they need training. I could easily take them to a professional, but seeing as how they are expensive as all getout here, and we have no jobs and/or money, I'm hoping to train them myself. I am lacking in experience though. I trained them to sit and do one or two minor tracks, but that's just the basics. I need to know the best way of going about intense obedience training, and all that stuff. Especially out here...some of the stuff they do could be dangerous if they were ever to get out, or come across wildlife, so I need to train them to be good little boys.
Anyone have any experience and/or advice in this area? Or any links to web pages that have adivce? I'm desperate here....these dogs have potential, but if I wait too long they'll be hard to train.

Dogs....I think the best you can hope for is that they don't pee all over your furniture and floors. LOL!

Yeah, we FINALLY broke them of that, thank goodness!!!! It was easier than I thought to housebreak them, so maybe other training won't be too hard.

I have jaws in obedience training he is doing really good. He was really good prior to training so that helps.
But if you want I can share with you what we do weekly.

Main thing is you have to show your dog you are the boss and he has to listen to you.
Train him with a leash. & don't let them lolly-gag around the house unless you have the time to watch them. Keep him in a cage.
I have jaws out always, even when i am working i am always keeping my eye on him, but when i don't have the time he goes in the cage.

Are you just looking to have him listen as far as, stay , sit, down, heel, long stays, long sits, long downs?

Yeah, our boys are cage-trained, and they do really well with it. It was a great way to help housebreak them too.
They know sit already, and are good at it when they want to be. The problem with dachshunds though, is that they are one of the hardest breeds to train, because they are extremely stubborn. They tend to listen when they want. I just want to get to a point where I'm not having to shout at my dog to do something, because he's completely ignoring me and doing the exact opposite of what I want, when I know that HE knows what I want him to do.
I love them, but oh man....frustrating.

you have to train him by the collar.
in other words, this is what we were tained to do.

Sit down , Sit down
kneel next to your dog,
your left hand in his collar , treat in the other.
guide your dowg down by the collar, with the treat in the otehr so he knows he gets a reward for what he does, then bring him right back up to a sit position,
repeat 3 times.
then praise him
practice every day

by training him by the collar you are showing you are the boss you direct his moves
if he goes to do something else you have to say EH EH, or what ever your command is for no, and you have to be quick about it so he knows he should not be doing it.

This works really well

now i can not do this with jaws three times becuase he is a big breed and with big breeds it is not good for their joints so i just do it with him once, mix it up with something else, like a stand stay and then just do that one more time. Also some dogs like boxers have short attention spands so sometimes toys work better then treats.

mainly you really have to invest the time.

Push down on the color, haha if he resist you have to push harder.
I had to use my whole body to push jaws down the first time. he was really Strong.

the best way to train a disobedient dog is with two feet of a rubber hose, or a belt...
jk, i love animals...that's why i like to kill em', lol.
