It looks like the Earth's atmosphere is actually losing its ability to cleanse itself.

According to this article over at CNN.com, it seems that the lowered levels of the dominant oxidizing compound in the lower atmosphere are a result of human activities. We've all been taught how the Earth, if simply left untouched from here on out, would eventually restore itself to a normal state; but mankind is really hindering the Earth's ability to do that.

Without reading to much into it, it sure seems like another sign of the times.
