Contest!!

skaorsk8 by skaorsk8 · Oct 10, 2002 · News · 197 views · ·

This isn't so much news as a contest (but I never have anything news worthy so I'm going to substitute this instead).

Here's the deal. By tonight at 6 P.M., you must come up with the earliest known piece of recorded poetry. You must write the first two lines of the poem in this box, so I know you're right.

The winner gets...hmm...let's see....how about an X-Box? Or...a free trip to Mahwah! (home of the Cheerio) ...

Note from iwz: all prizes will be awarded by skaorsk8.

Beowulf:

Old English

HWÆT, WE GAR-DEna in geardagum,

þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon,

Modern English:

LO, praise of the prowess of people-kings

of spear-armed Danes, in days long sped,

Reference:

Beowulf is the oldest epic in English. Drawing from Danish history and folk tales, it was composed, probably in the early 8th century,. by a Northumbrian poet.

Beowulf is the olded poem, above are the first 2 lines from Old English and translated into Modern English.

What do I win?

I know... no answer and no winner?

skaorsk8 skaorsk8OG 2002 ·

Well, originally the answer was the one from Genesis 2, bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh, etc. But you guys have raised so many good answers (like that link that Ian posted) that even though I know the original answer is right, everyone brought interesting ideas to the table. (That first post about Latin or whatever it was KILLED me though!)
