eZabel Legacy

A quiet reinvention arrived on eZabel in September 2006 when Dan Giaimo retired his old dgiaimo username and reappeared as gizmo -- a move born not from boredom but from a genuine desire to be a little less findable online after someone in his congregation took issue with something on his MySpace page. The new name stuck, and so did the same Dan underneath it: an Oracle database engineer who could rattle off STORAGE clause syntax with PCTINCREASE calculations from memory, then pivot seamlessly into heartfelt advice about the agonizing gap between knowing you should "just be friends first" and actually pulling it off. His Musings posts were where he did his best thinking out loud, and nearly half his 82 comments landed there -- thoughtful, mid-length contributions that read like someone talking through life with the door slightly ajar.

Dan's gizmo era captured him in a particular season: settled into his Oracle job in the Bay Area, helping his parents move back across the country to Massachusetts, and navigating the social terrain of singleness with the same analytical honesty that made his dgiaimo profile so distinctive. He debated dating strategy with brotherman, swapped earthquake stories with socalgal, helped theremin decode Oracle tablespace configurations, and traded music recommendations with fivezero. When Live 105's BFD festival rolled around in 2008, he was genuinely giddy -- Cypress Hill, Flogging Molly, Everlast, Pennywise -- and came back reporting that the Flogging Mollys were even better live than expected, though he still preferred smaller venues. A Boston accent quiz declared him unmistakably Bostonian despite years in California, which delighted him in that particular way things delight people who never quite stopped being from where they grew up. His last post, in July 2008, was about Wii Tennis making his shoulder sore -- the perfect exit line for someone who brought his whole body into everything he did, even a video game.

eZabel Personality Type: ISTJ -- "The Careful Reboot." Methodical, sincere, and quietly loyal, gizmo was dgiaimo with the volume turned down half a notch -- same precision, same earnestness, just a slightly smaller footprint and a username that gave him room to breathe. He showed up, he helped, he thought carefully before speaking, and when he left, the forum was a little quieter for it.
