just enable the iTunes toolbar on your taskbar. then when you minimize itunes to the tray, it'll give you the controls in the taskbar.

You don't have to use iTunes with an iPod, there are plenty of alternatives like ephod and others.

But iPods can only play AAC, AIFF, MP3, and WAV. so if you have WMAs, you're stuck with converting...
